Fuel gauge and dealer headache 5 Years, 7 Months ago
So I have another problem with my dealer - I promise that I am looking for a new mechanic At the time of the initial 600 mile check up I told my dealer that when my tank is empty and I fill up, my guage still reads on "E" and will do so for about 10-15 miles, then work it's way up to "full" and then it seems to function correctly. After the check up they said that the guage was bad and ordered me a new one. Instead of replacing just the guage they replaced my entire councel which set my odometer back to "0". Granted my bike only had 600 miles on it but still now it says "15" when it should say "615". I went to fill up today, and guess what... the gauge still doesn't work - does the exact same thing. So basically the dealer ended up doing nothing but setting my odometer back. I am wondering if anyone has a solution or idea of how to fix this problem. This bike is the first Yamaha that I have ever owned (was riding a Honda before this) but I have to say from my experience Yamaha has the worst dealers. I have been asking around to see if anyone knows of an independant bike mechanic around my town.

Blessings-
BP

My gauge does the same thing. I think a lot of them do. See if your dealer still has your old one. If they do, have them put it back on if you are concerned with the odometer. My last bike was a Honda but I did all the work myself so can't comment on the service. I can say the dealer where I bought my Roadies has some Class A terrible wrenches.

Sorry to hear about your dealer problems. I have to say that mine has been pretty good. It could be because there are several Yamaha dealers in the surrounding area, so there is competition.
My dealer told me upon delivery to expect this situation with the gas gauge. After I fill up, it usually takes a few (4-5) miles, or getting up to 45 MPH or so before the gauge reads Full. For, whatever reason, that is apparently the way the Star's fuel gauge works. After it gets up to Full, mine is very accurate. Hope this helps.

You can make the dealer write up a statement about the lost mileage and have his resident notary sign and date it for you. However the mileage loss is money in your pocket lol ,by the way I have the same problem with my tank.It seems to be a popular defect, I am currently trying to get the recalls for my 2005 Roadie.......Coug

That is the way the guage works it has to reset itself after a few miles...
Thats right.. when I fill up it will not register full until a few miles

The dealer told me this was normal...
If your dealer doesnt know the Road Star any better than that ..Man ..I would'nt let them near my bike..

The Sad part is ...the majority of dealers cant even change the oil properly let alone perform a serious mechanical repair..

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/10/06 19:25

About the fuel gauge,
I beleive the roadie's fuel gauge is supposed to work this way. From what I can tell, it is an electronically controlled "motor driven" type of gauge. The electronics actually average out the signal sent by the fuel sender in the tank.
This is so the gauge needle does not whack itself to death when the fuel's a sloshin all over on a bumpy road. After fillin' my bike up, it takes up to 5 minutes for the guage to recalibrate itself and read "full" (...What the heck do I care, I KNOW I've got a full tank for the first few miles anyway ) My dealer in Sundre has been great. (I actually never bought either of my two Yamis from him, but I do get all my goodies and service through him.) ...Both my bikes were NOS still in the crates in the city, I bought them on the spot before someone else got the great deal. ...Otherwise I woulda bought through my local dealer in Sundre.
