carb puking observation/question 4 Months ago
Just came back from a 1,700 mile trip and the bike did something it has never done before. It started puking gas out the air cleaner (Stock) with the fuel pump pumping like crazy for about 15 seconds. I know that this has been discussed before and happens sometimes when the bike is really hot.

Here's the deal - I've ridden in 90 - 100 degree temps with no problem. It seemed to be altitude related!! I live in Portland, basically sea level and went to Glacier NP (3,100 ft). The problem only showed up around that area. This ever happen to anybody else?

Thanks,
Dan

P.S. Averaged 43 MPG for the trip fully loaded and with the wife. Much of it at 70 - 80

Bike stock or have any mods. You might have had a piece of dirt go thru and cause the float to stick, then cleared itself. I've been up to 9,000 ft and not had any problems except some loss in power.

i have an 07 R* and had the same problem twice now. once was late morning around 10:00am or so, was runnin all highway on the way up to 10,000 feet in alt to hit a favorite mountain lunch spot. rode for about an hour straight, had my grub, and when i came out to hop on my pony and go the fuel pump went frickin nuts and could smell gas really bad. black puff of smoke came out the pipe (stock at the time) and she just kinda died, took a few min to get the fuel cleared out so she would start and then ran great the rest of the day no problem. temp's were about 85 to 90. about 2 weeks later it did it again just running around town, went into a store, came out, turned the key and the fuel pump seemed to run for like 15 to 20 seconds before shuttin off and the gas smell was way heavy. same as above, but then once she fired up and stayed runnin all was o.k.

My '99 does it on a regular basis I am afraid to say. Doesn't matter what time of day, temprature, how much gas in the tank, or any of the other issues mentioned in the threads pertaining to this issue... it just does it regularly... even though I always shut off the gas for twenty or thirty seconds before shutting the bike down.

I never know when it will do it, sometimes it goes for two or three firings before it will puke... but at some point, when I start it, it will be flooded and puke.
