Oil, Water, and poor performance 5 Months ago
Wondering what may be up with my bike. It's an 02 with pipes, BAK, manifold and Dyna. Changed my oil 2 weeks ago, went on a long ride through the rain the day afterwards. Typically I get about 47-48 mpg's. For the last two tanks I have gotten less than 40. I have had lots of carb problems in the past, but I thought I had it dialed in pretty well, and don't know how it could have changed. The bike seems to have lost a little power, but not much. WOT test seemed dead on still. Any advice on what to check?

I'm guessing here, when was the last time you cleaned the filter, I'm thinking it may have had enough loose dirt on it that when it got wet, the dirt turned into mud and partially sealed the filter efectively choking the bike down some. I would give it a good cleaning and see if that helps..if you already have, then that shoots that idea in the foot..

I assume that since you did a wot, that you checked your pms as well.

While it hasn't happened to me, I've read that some of the guys have had it vibrate completely out. The result of couse is a significant change in fuel mileage. So, if you haven't already, make sure it's there and that it's the proper turns out you expect it to be.

PMS was where it should be. Checked the air filter. Didn't see too much dirt on the outside, but when I held it up to the light, couldn't even see through it on the forward facing side. I'll clean that out and see. Thanks for the help, hopefully this fixes it!

I dunno about your Roadie for sure but, I only get between 38 - 40mpg on my roadie no matter what I do. I just don't know how these guys get 45-52mpg I have tried everything from porting the manifold to different jets, playing with PMS checking the float level changing oil, and cleaning air filter and can't get more than 42mpg. Soo I gave up and just ride cause she runs great and has tons of power plugs are perfect, no soot in the pipes WOT is dead on. It probably doesn't help that I have a w/s, weigh 275, and ride it hard

Also from what I hear it matters how you check your mileage too. concensus seems to be average 3 tanks for your "true" mpg

Thanks for all help. I don't know why I was stupid enough to pull the carb off the bike and check everything in it before checking the air filter, but oh well. Went on a 350 mile ride yesterday and averaged 53mpgs!!! Glad to have her back in good shape again.
