Doc,
Just wondering, do you have the stage iv if so, what mileage do you get and do you burn premium?

upon looking further, the bike has damn near every piece of chrome from the Yamaha Roadstar catalog. I got him down to 10,000 and decided i had to have that bike. Took the wife and took off for the weekend. So know some questions: What risks in running 87, road 500 miles and the bike didn't mind from what i could tell, starter seems weak, and v&h short staggered are a little loud (what are some good rumbling pipes for this bike. Got about 36 when running hard and cruising 80, normal riding was 40-43 mpg. LOVE this bike.

Pig, welcome to the clinic.
I'm looking forward to seeing some pics. Especially curious about the diamond cut jugs and how they look. Post some soon.

PIG 116 , Why risk motor damage for .80-1.00 per fill up ? If it has H/C pistons and the whole works , then , in good conscience, it would be hard for me to tell you to run the cheap stuff.
A lot of guys "upgrade" to the Warrior starter because the stocker has a harder time with the bigger slugs , and the Warrior starter handles them fine.
Anyway , looking forward to seeing it , so , post a pic (& maybe get a dyno run , so we can all drool......) BB

My next fill up will be premium to see if I can tell a difference in the motor. How can using the lower octane be harmful. Definitely don't want to screw it up. Got a good base on mpg, sounds, and power from the weekend so I'll let you know. Thanks for the replies

Octane number is an indicator of gasoline resistance to ignition from heat. At the same compression ratio, higher octane burns slower.
If you use regular gas at higher compression it burns too fast. What happens is that as the fuel/air mix is compressed it heats up and ignites before the spark plug fires (pre-detonation = ping, ping, rattle, rattle). High octane fuel resist this pre-detonation.
