Re:To Lower or Not to Lower 5 Months, 1 Week ago
well gents...LOWER!...I am 230, scrape every now and then , but like a previos post in this thread, just ease the inside foot out...progressive srping..

I can raise or lower in less than 10 minutes.....

Adjustable....do it yourself...I did
Parts are readibly available depending on where you live.....if you don;t have mcmaster or grainger locallly..AND/OR are willing to wait..you can get some these parts for 40-50% less than Mcmaster or grainger!

NOTE: all thread specs here can just as easily be 1/2" x 20...just a lot more
turning to adjust...but easier to keep even during adjustment

Here goes:
HEIM JOINTS: these are available at mcmaster ($) but you can google search.
you need 2, 1/2x13 thread that are male LH thread, and 2 , 1/2 x 13 that are female
RH thread. This combo will make sense below
there are several grades of these...get the strongest tensile strength you can afford...I went with SS...but others will work..

SPACER 1/2 x 13 LH/RH threaded spacer..( sometimes referred to as a turnbuckle
depending on where you are searching....again SS if you can find it, zinc plated steel will work as well...aluminum will but last choice

ROD: 1/2" x 13 RH rod....you'll need a little more than a foot. SS if possible
or zinc plated steel

the reason for the combo spec on the heim joints..LH threaded rod is hard to find!
I got mine at grainger.

measure the lentgth center to center of your existing bones....with everything
tightend as much as possible...measure the depth of your threads on the female side of the spacer and the heim joint....add that length to the difference between
your stock bone and the total of the parts. I forget but the space of the rod is only 3+ " or so.

Assemble....loctite RED..the rod into the female heim only!!! I drilled and put a pin in mine...this must not turn!!!!
then, measure both are the same length as a stock bone with everything fully tightened.

I made marks in the rod with a file in 1/8" increments from that starting position
only to about 1/2" out...

IMPORTANT:when you turn the spacer to "open" up the lentgth...you are opening the thread count times 2 (out on the male heim, and out on the rod!!!!

1/8 total length equals roughly 1/2" lower...

you will need to replace the bolt that holds your dogbones in the frame along with the nut. !/2" x 13 or 20 ( a non metric nut! oh my!) the heim joints come with 1/2 holes...they will not fit the stock bolt.

I also added spacers to keep the width consistent with stock...

attached (hopefully) is a pic..top is my mockup of adjustable, black one is PCS lowering bone...and the the stock one...

sorry if this seems like a lot..it's actually really easy...but they are availble on ebay quite often..
J

ps..i would show my bike..but still can't get with the new sig pic stuff.... of , got it..whew!

so, who's kit would you recommend? Also curious, how does this compare to air suspension? Is that a raise or lower on the fly? How's the ride?

you can raise or lower without a jack or boards if you have ashort wrench handy..
ride is great...I used a progessive spring...
I have been on two bikes with air suspension that were a bit bouncy...
I have always wanted to try the one with the air bladder and uses a stock spring..about 800!

Re:To Lower or Not to Lower 5 Months ago
if you were to lower or install an air ride kit,

would there be a need to modify the kick stand? i saw a site where they sold "shorty kickstands." along side of lowering kits.

thanks in advance

Mine is lowered about an inch and a half, stock suspension, I used to drag the boards, but the forward controls solved that problem, now the big straights exhaust, thats a different story..I have thought about cutting them off some, but probably will just go with some shorter pipes..

I got the shorty kick stand and my bike is also lowered 1 1/2" from the
rear. My exhaust is about 2 inches from the ground. The shorty stand just leans your bike more for a more lowered look. I lowered my bike using >>> Lowering Kit, but it was much cheaper when I purchased them 2 years ago $89.
