I had this happen to me before. Later(couple months) I replace the front tire and I never had it again. Made me think(yeah, it happens ), the previous tire was not correctly balanced. Inquired at the dealer that install the tire and he told me that they don't balance spokes wheel. Needless to say that I never had another tire installed there. Now I can let the handlebar go on decel with no problem.

IMHO ... you bikes should be solid. If you have a shimmy then there's something wrong.

Could be various things (or a combination) but check the simple things first ...

- tire pressure. A low back tire will make your bike free 'wobbly' on the highway
- cupped front tire ... some brands are more prone than others
- steering head bearings ... incorrect torque or worn/rusted

When I first got my bike it had a shimmy.I tightened the steering stem nut just as Doc refered to until the front forks would ease to one side or the other without slamming and it has been fine since. If you have a shimmy something is wrong and needs to be fixed .NO bike would be on the market with a Shimmy as the norm for it because the manufacturer would be paying major claims. No matter how dangerous it is you should be able to let go of the handle bars if your bike is set up correctly IMO...just watch out for gravel and road trash when you do it. .....Coug

had it happen with mine, I can get it to do it every time I try by decelerating from 35 to 25 mph with very loose grip on handle bars or hands free - if I hold on with relaxed arms no shimmy.

started when I added lowers.. notice it's a little worse when my REAR tire is a little low on air. have the metzlers...

Checked mine this morning and I have no wobble. I let go of the bars at about 45 and coasted down to about 20 with no wobble whatsoever. The handlebar ends vibrated like crazy but there was no wobble or shimmy. Mine is an 01 R*.

Judging from the responses, it seems that this problem isn't unique to me. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it. Not to be dramatic, but this is the sort of bike problem that can be a BIG problem.
I've had the same problem, also had what seemed like a "catch" in the frontend at slow speed turns, luckly my bike is still under warranty and the dealership completely dissassembled the frontend and replaced all the bearings, nuts, and steering stem. My bike only had alittle over 8,000 miles when mine started having problems.. Just got back from my road trip, rode 1,700 mile alltogether this weekend and had no problems!

if I let go of the handle bars, even at slow speed the wobble gets so bad so fast that it will scare you. I just noticed tonight. I was riding one handed at about 25 mph and it went crazy. I've never had it do that before.

I've read enough replies to conclude that the Road Star, compared to other bikes, is prone to front end shimmy problems if everything isn't perfect. It appears that 'close to perfect' isn't perfect enough.
