Noob Questions 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Guys/Gals?

Reading through the posts it seems we own a bike with a lot of character, bumps, knocks, chirps etc and everyone has a demon or two inside. I guess as repetative as this is I'd like some thougts or advice on my babies demons, I have the chirp and the squeel when two up riding so reading your posts I will tighten my belt, I will choose to ignor the knocks I am hearing at the moment at idle, but along with this I have some questions.

She smells like fuel at the rear end actually standing anywhere near her at idle I guess what people descibe as running rich? I assume I will need to get her to a yamaha dealer for a tune and service?

In Australia its KLM per Hour so sorry dont know MLS but went for my first descent ride today have put 185kms on her and the guage is showing her as nearly empty, guy I bought it of suggested she was good for 250 to 300 depending on my riding style?

Also get a weird ticking noise if i put my head near the block in the driveway it sounds like a piece of metal flying around in the engine. If sitting over her on the road mobile it sounds like a piece of metal tinging around in the fuel tank maybe two different noises.

is this all normal, i know nothing about bikes, but want to learn and am so happy this is my first bike I guess the long term thing is to own her for a couple of years then complete custom overhaul after I've worked her out.

Brad,
We have all (well most of us) had the noob questions so welcome to the club. If you're smelling gas at the rear I would guess you're running a little rich. The 185km converts to about 115 miles which is 40-50 miles less than I get on my 07. The tanks on these can be a little hard to get full and not leave an air pocket in them. I'd try another tank full or two and see if it stays the same. I'm sure one of the pros will jump in with better info but thats a good place to start. Enjoy the bike!!

I get abut 250 km on a tank for city driving. Your low mileage and smell of gas would indicate you're probably running rich. I suspect someone rejetted when they put the aircleaner and sipons on.

How many kms on the bike now. You could be due for a valve adjustment (top end ticking)

I get 170 miles from a tank full. That is from full to main empty. 170 miles is 270 kilometers. If you smell raw gas fumes then it is drastically rich! Starcruiser06 has made a recording of the various noises made by our machines.

Check your float level. Find out what you have in there for jets and needle. Something to try - Choke knob trim

Sounds like you might have the headlight rattle everyone is talking about. A buddy of mine told me his 05 * does it. I havent had it so far but do a search here on headlamp rattle and you should get a few results and things to try.

Yep, there's a little "Ticking" sound that comes from right unter your right foot... I sounds like a tinker (who might actually give a da*n...) It's the bottom of the lifter system... It's OK...
You can check out my vidio for other "usual" sounds from my stock '06 too...

Re:Noob Questions 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hello,

I come from Canada, so I am quite familiar with the metric values of the Roadstar. I just came back from a week-long trip to through the states of Maine and New Hampshire. I had an opportunity to measure and record my mileage during the whole week. When riding a mix of highway and back roads, I routinely got greater than 260 km before the reserve light turned on. From past experience, the reserve gives me an additional 50 km. This was riding the bike two-up, with luggage in the saddlebags and the rear rack. The only performance mod is a set of Cobra straight pipes. I also have a Memphis Shades windshield on the front.

I hope this helps.

BTW, we rode over 3000 km and our trip was a great experience. My wife and I met a lot of great people while on the road and we had a very positive experience, overall. We some some very beautiful country.
