Bearings or balancing?? HELP! 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
OK folks...here's the scenario...

Just put on a new hunk of rear rubber Wednesday night...first time doing it myself (with help from friends that have the tire changer) and self balanced (same friends). Last tire was a Metz that I must have gotten 14-15K out of but it was down to low tread depth and cupping badly...felt like a nobby tire every curve it took. I started noticing this rough-road, nobby tire feel, even without the lean for corners and decided, before I go on the Midnight Ride this last weekend, I better get my boy a new rear shoe!! So, changed tires (stayed w/ Metz), but now, even after new skin on rear, still have the same feeling in the seat. After riding north and spinning 800+ miles on it this last weekend, it didn't go away. I've figured out that I start feeling the vibration after 30+mph and it doesn't go away until I get below that speed again. I know the excessive vibration is making my hands go numb quickly. Not helping the carpal @ all!!

I don't think it has anything to do with the rear wheel balancing, because it was there before I changed it out and rebalanced. So if it's balancing, it's got to be the front. The front tire only has 8K+ miles and still looks real good. No cupping or odd wear. Spoked wheel weights and haven't lost any since it was done by a shop last year. Rear wheel...used 1/4 oz. spoke wheel weights as well to balance.

My other consideration is due to the hold over of the vibration (can't tell for sure if it's front or rear or both), could this be wheel bearings, due to it coming on just this year, part way thru the season? It was nice and smooth last year when the new front was put on.

All thoughts and suggestions are welcome!! I just rolled over 40K this weekend and I'm certain none of the wheel bearings have been replaced but I did check the outter bearings when the rear was off and they spun well and looked to be in good shape.

Thanks!

TwoEagleStar,

Have you by chance checked that your front end is tight? Jack up the front. Grab the forks and see if you have any play front-to-back, side-to-side. If so, Your neck bearings need to be tightened (and or replaced).

Others will jump in, I'm sure.

Make sure your engine mounts are still snug.

How about tire pressure. Low tire pressure causes vibratin sometimes.
