'08 AIS Removal 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
|
So I ordered a kit online that's for an 04-07 from Nightsky Customs (off eBay) anyway, once I get to looking it seems the 08 is different. There's 2 plugs running to the finned cooling unit at the front, instead of the one, and unplugging them does affect how the bike runs. So my question is, has anyone done a removal or had a removal done? Did they take everything? The bike sounds retarded when it backfires and although its rare I've had it backfire once just as I downshifted/revved at an intersection and it stalled the engine. So, anyone who can help it'd be appreciated!

Aren't many 08's on the Clinic yet, you're our guinea pig.
As for the backfire while you downshifted, I know of the carbed version don't like being blipped while downshifting. Can't say on the FI versions.

Glad you were designated the "guinea pig"...
I get a significant popping and flame on hard decel after the Road House Dooleys were installed.
I'll be watching to see the results.

hmm not what I wanted to hear.. I too have a 08 and was going to do the AIS next week when I installed the new exhaust on it.. The ais kit is also up to 07'.. I have not seen anything for 08 ais removal yet. Also, I blip the throttle while down shifting but never use the motor to slow me down it seems like it would be to much on the tranny so I hold the clutch in and brake.. The brakes are great on these things but I do blip the throttle while down shifting and I dont get any back firing.

I think I might just go ahead and rip it all off on a day when I've got time enough to put it back on if the bike runs like crap... I'll see how it goes.

I would guess that the with efi it is going to get false rich readings from the o2 sensor, because the AIS pumps air into the exhaust, eliminating the extra air will make the computer think its rich.. someone should have a remap for the cdi that can cure the problem...

Is there a communication port for the engine management computer on the 08 Roadstars? If so, you should be able to find an interface cable to connect a laptop to your bike and change the FI mapping.
back in 2000 I saw some software and a serial port cable that would have allowed my laptop to communicate with the FI computer in my 1999 Dodge pickup, but I didn't buy it because it was $300 and I was hurting for cash at the time. Now I wish I had bought it. Oh well ...

I think bowhunter is probably correct. The computer receives a reading from the O2 sensor and modifies the 'jetting' appropriately. If you remove the AIS you change the reading that comes from the sensor .... in this case it would read not enough oxygen (too rich) and lean out the mix at the carb.

Doc:
With the install of the Road House Dooleys, I moved one of the 02 sensors to the LH side for the LH pipe. They are a two-in-one with a cross-over. Obviously, there's much more exhaust coming out the RH pipe with this configuration. I'm wondering how the computer is interpreting it...
I wonder if it would have been better to run two in the single RH pipe.
Thoughts?
