Don't take comments here serious, the folks usually try and make folks feel right at home. And yes it was a very legitimate comment. You've got a 700 plus pound bike under you and it can be unrully at low speeds. I personally took a riders safety course and have been riding since 1972. It never hurts to get professional training on anything. Compared to my old Pan Head this thing is one huge hunk of metal. I used to swing the old straight leg around like riding a bicycle, but I now use a lot of caution, especially at slow speeds. I am a short person and the bike is a little taller than I like, so until I get it lowered and feel I have control, it will be slow in the curves, turns and any place else where I don't feel I have stability. I have found the more miles you put on any bike the more you get used to how it handles. My best suggestion is to ride it every day (weather permitting) and get used to the feel of it, adjust anything you can to make it fit you better and if after 6 months if it doesn't feel right, find something that does.

Mike, the Yamaha service manual places the torque value for the steering head too low and you can actually tighten it to around 8-10 lbs. Your front end should be easy to turn when up on the lift but not flop over so quickly. Try moving it forward and back by grabbing the fork lowers and see if there is any play, if so, tighten the steering nut..
