33-Tooth Pulley - Lower MPG? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
I'm perplexed.

I swapped out my stock 32-tooth pulley for a 33-tooth from a 1600 expecting to get better gas mileage (lower RPM at higher speed). So far, after two tanks, it looks like I'm getting even lower MPG. I haven't figured out the numbers, but my gas light came on at 167 miles today. I was going 174-181 miles previously before it lit up.

What I'm thinking is that maybe I haven't adjusted to it yet and need to run her at higher rpms, so I'm not lugging and using more fuel to maintain or increase speed. I know it's almost at an idle in 5th gear at 70, which is better than it used to be.

Any words of experience?

Soba, do you find it takes more throttle to get up to speed from 1st? That could be where you might be dumping a bit more fuel. Just a guess.

Hey Soba
Your probably getting close to same mileage, if not a little better on highway. Your speedo and odometer are off now. A 31 tooth would make speedo speed up, a 33 should make it slow down. Or, is it the other way around.

Isn't the odo a separate circuit from the speedo?

Hmmm, interesting thought. My guesstimate is that the 33-tooth will actually make my indicated speed closer to accurate. (I was right around 5% off, indicated 63 was 60 or so). I guess I should look into were the actual odometer measure is taken and see which way that gear would push it.

I can handle it being about the same MPG, just not worse. At least the bike seems to work a bit less at 70-75 mph.

It's late, so forgive me if I'm typing stupid. It seems to me if your pulley is now turning a bit slower the actual speed should be close or right on with the speedo. The speedo (and odo - CoachDan and rstarny were on the money) signal comes from the fifth gear pickup coil. If your pulley is more in line with the speed sensor, you should be dead on. I believe the odo was more accurate than the speedo, so I'm not sure at this point what affect the pulley might have on it (showing lower mileage than it should?).

Since your scoot will be a bit slower coming off the line and getting up to speed, d'ya think you might be gunning it more than you used to?

PapaTom, It's possible I haven't made the adjustment in the way I throttle up. I also thought it would be closer to actual speed now.

I'm going to ride it for a while and see if anything changes. Leaving for the New England trip this coming Thursday. Will have ample miles and fill-ups to help me gauge what's going on.
