Sputter..Pop..then go.....??? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi..Everyone..this is my first post ..
It is actually for my Dad..He has a 2002 Roadstar,,and it has been acting strange latly..
You fire it up and it idles fine,,but when you start to drive it sounds like it loads up then takes off...It sputter ..pops then takes off..
I have checked the battery...the terminals where loose,,tighten them up..then checked out the charging system..it was charging at 12.65vo;ts give or take ,10V..I then told hem to turn off his front driving light beside the headlight and bang it was charging at 13,5V....Great that solved that..the I told him to get some fresh gas,,it was on reserve...and when he came back ..it was still the same..so i drained the carb in case it had water in it...nope did't help..So today ...checked the plugs and furl filter and air filter..Air and fuel filter are OK(K+N air filter cleaned and reoiled)The plugs look like a 2 stroke that were fouled...So we changed them...still the same.......Last ditch effort i played with the air screw...still didn't fix it???I am now lost am asking for some help......The only thing i can think of is a dirty carb(plugged jets) or something faulty in the electrical system?????
Sorry for rambling but i would appreciate any help.
Thanks Ken

I got rid of popping out of the carb when I changed the Dyna 3000 settings to those supplied by posts on this site.

I also have been having problems with the intake manifold seating properly. The bike had a worsening vibration (shakes my eyeballs out) and I thought it was carbon build-up. Engine performance improved after treatment, but did not eliminate vibes. I removed the intake manifold and installed new O rings ($13.50 + ouch!), trying to press manifold downward while tightening to insure seating. The engine improved immensely and I drove it to work today. After driving 20-25 minutes, the vibrations returned as the engine heated up. I believe the manifold has developed leaks again. I will tear it apart this evening and use high-heat silicone on the flanges with my new O rings to hopefully eliminate the leaks for good. The rear cylinder seems to be most affected and the engine. I understand that a lean mixture from leakage or improperly tuned carb can cause backfiring out the carb and/or exhaust.
I suggest that you follow the manifold leak test found in the forum here and see what you find.
Some of the other guys can get you the links if you need them.
I will let you know how it works out.

Welcome to the site first off!!

Sounds like the bike was running fine, then it started acting up, so something changed. It would most likely be the gas I would think, good place to start would be a good carb cleaning and see what that does. If non of the settings changed I would have to assume that some dirt got into the carb.

That's where I would start anyway.

If that doesn't do any good, check back, we'll figure something out on this site, I guarantee you!

If you trying to take off fast when the engine is cold then that's normal.

If it's happening when hot then ... Yes ... sounds like you're loading up .... try turning the accelerator pump screw in 1 turn at a time.

Probably sounds dumb, but I installed the Dyna 3000 last night. Got my boy tore down and built up last night and didn't get to try it out cuz my girls were in bed. It dawned on me today when thinking about the switches, are they in the ON position when shipped? Or off? So I called Dyna and confirmed they come in the ON position! Glad I thought of it since I had it all backwards. Maybe I'm dumb for not knowing....... But man what a difference this new part makes!!!!!! all i can say is DAMN!!!!!! And you can get it at phatperformancepatrs.com right now for $219.95!!!!!!!!!!!! Better get on this deal like I did!!!!!!!!
