I took the rollover valve off, and noticed the tank vent, that is under the instrument panel. The elbow coming off the tank, has what looks like the shell casing of a 22, with a small hole in the center. I thought this was going to be an open line. Is this like a pressure release of some kind? I've noticed when the temps get above 90 I get a whoosh when I remove the gas cap to fill up. No problems, just curious what this is, in the end of the elbow. I couldn't find any reference in the service manual. Thanks, guys.

there is nothing in it, it is just a thick walled tube. although I haven't done it, some folks will bend it straight and drill it out.. as Doc would say, "not for the feint of heart" be aware that inside the tank, it has what seems to be a solid end on it or maybe a right angle..  You can also vent the gas cap and eliminate the problem...check the tech articles for more info....  |

Are you saying that you have removed the rollover and you still get a 'swoosh' when you remove the gas cap.
If so the vent is plugged and you need to either vent your cap or drill out the vent tube.

Yes, I've removed the rollover valve and can blow on the tube and air goes thru without restriction toward the bottom of the bike. I attached a hose to the elbow on the tank, opened the gas cap try to blow into the tube and it's hard as hell to get air into the tank. That's when I found this small cap on the end of the elbow, that looks like a shell casing with a small hole in it. YES, I am saying i've removed the rollover and still get a "swoosh" sound, when I remvove the gas cap.

Blowing through the vent tube (the metal tube on the front of the tank) is very difficult .... the hole is very small. It also does not vent directly through the end of the tube in the tank but through the side of the tube. That's why you can 'poke' it with a small wire to clean it out. 
Now you're left with decision .... fix vent tube or vent cap.

vent the cap, best 15 minute mod I have ever done. Plus a lot less chance of error drilling out the tube, as Doc said not for faint of heart.

Doc / Dearman, sounds like it's time for me to vent the cap. Flashback, it's a 2000 and I'm the second owner. Doc, would I have to straighten the elbow to drill it out? How deep does this plug go into the elbow. I would drill it out, but I'm not sure about straightening the elbow,,

To straighten the elbow, grab a pair of pliers and 'fold' it up. You can't twist is back and forth or it will break off so don't get too energetic.
Once it's straightened, use a bit larger than the diameter of hole but obviously smaller than the diameter of the tube. Pick any size.]
The hardest part about drilling the hole is not breaking the bit .... so don't go twisting it. I broke mine but lucky had a bit protruding so I was able to pull it out. It's quite long and I think it take the whole length of the smaller bits.
After you drilled it out, bend the tube back to its original shape and touch up with paint.

Doc: ?? I guess you drain the fuel and leave the gas cap off, just so it will vent during the process?? When drilling, do any of the metal shavings go inside the tank? I'm getting a new fuel sending unit delivered Tuesday. I guess that would be a good time to drill out the vent tube, and replace the sending unit at the same time. I read about venting the gas cap, and the smell of gas that it leaves in the garage. Will venting the tube be about the same, creating a smell of gas in the garage? If the smell is going to be there regardless of which process I use, I guess I'll do the gas cap. As "Flashback" said, It's not for the faint of heart. I've disasembled the gas cap before and it would be a lot easier then drilling.
