I was able to remove everything on the carb except the Throttle Position Sensor

You don't want to remove the TPS. That will take you to the bad part of Tinkerville. If you trace the wires off of it back under the tank you will see a plug you can disconnect.

Musky is right on

Although the Cobra Classic slashcuts talked about a jet kit in the instructions

They ran great without touching the carb

The Yamaha Speedstar which is really tuned for the 1700 just mentioned in the instructions turning out the pms and only rejetting if the air intake was changed
I didnt touch the PMS and the bike runs great

Antitheft screws on th TPS?? whats next??

Hey Pop, how come you changed from the Cobra's? Too loud? I listened to your sound file and I'm not really in the market for something that loud. Twenty five years of airhorns and sirens has kinda turned me off to LOUD noises, a nice deep rumble would be nice. Unfortunately I've yet to find many R*'s in my area so I can't listen and get ideas.

I just went from Stock to Cobra Speedster Slash Cuts. They look very good, and sound fantastic. I have listened to V&H Long Shots, and Hard Krome, both are louder at idle and under acceleration. I have not heard the Speedstar 2-1-2, but that was what I was considering until a great deal on the Cobras came along.

I am not going to say the Cobra's are not loud, but they are pleasant at cruise speeds and unless you really get on it they are pretty mellow. The neighbors are not complaining. They are loud enough to keep the Cagers aware of my existence and I have noticed a lot less of the wnadering into my lane. The have removable baffles as well and if too loud that can probably be improved.

Good luck.

I love the rumble...

Roadie
Ok here goes
Wanted louder than stock got deal on Cobra slip ons with fixed baffles
too tinny and midrange and loud... sold them on e-bay
Got a real wing ding deal on a set of Cobra classics slashcuts complete system
but before they arrived.. I spent time on this site and grabbed my stage three
tools and when I heard the low rumble I was running around tellin the wife thats the ticket...the Cobras arrived and I was so pleased with the stage 111 I listed them on E-bay but no bites --pulled them otta the box and decided to try them
nice sound removable baffles in fibreglass ..larger muffler bodies and looked good ..lowered the passenger floorboards...not loud at idle and cruise but a little loud on throttle... swapped back and forth between the stage 111...stage 111 seemed sluggish in comparison
Got readin about the Warrior and Roadstar Speedstar exhaust systems
the Warrior has 2 into 1 into 2 Megacone and Road star drags or 2 into 1 into 2 megacone
just decided to go for it...sold the cobras on e-bay and love the speedstar
Megacone... slightly louder on idle and cruise ...but suprising quieter on throttle than the Cobras The Cobras used hose clamps to attach the heat shields
The megacone has one piece exhaust shields and flanges held on with a screw and the exhaust studs ..no hose clamps and wrapped further around the two into one head pipes ... thicker.. larger dia 2 3/8.. beautiful chrome.. shields.. and I was really impressed with the large chrome muffler body that goes from a single inlet to two baffled outlets.. quality is there
These guys still are loud but make the bike run like a raped ape and roars...
with a deeper sound on idle.. they may still be too loud for you..
Maybe stage 1 would be enough
My neighbour said he could hear the Cobras comin further away
There are days when wish I had the quiet stocks back on...
And then there are days when......

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/11/01 14:11

Thanks Pop, I've done the stage 1 and the sound is "okay". I'd like a bit more growl to it but not too much. Yeah I know, I'm being awful damn picky. Also, one of my biggest complaints about the stock pipes is they're so big. I want to flip and lower the passenger pegs (and floorboards when I get them) but the stock pipes are just too bulky and prevent it. Same with the bags, I had to go smaller than I wanted cause there's really just no room for anything bigger.

Roadie

Well I guess that leaves out stage three
Trouble is most after market pipes are louder than stage 111
Looks are probably more important ..performance???
What kind of look??

Sounds like you want a quiet growl???usually its a loud roar
from the aftermarket

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/11/01 15:29

Performance is always a good thing, a new look is great too.

I don't know, I'm in the early stages of looking. I may change my mind and go with something louder. I can always hang onto the stock pipes and switch back and forth if I want. Sometimes loud is good, sometimes less noise is good too.

Roadie

I can only say that I am really happy with the Megacone
Its a performance exhaust system made by Yamaha for the Yamaha and who knows their bike better
As well since the design is unique you are not going to see the same thing on a Harley , Honda. Suzuki etc. Its the only 2 into 1 into 2 I know of
The new look aka Roadliner Stratoliner and performance wise seems to be a 2 into 1 exhaust
It wasn't until I had the exhaust in my hand that I really knew ..up til then... it was a gamble...trying different things is fun and ya learn a lot
Because there are so many good choices out there ..if ya dont like it ya can always sell it or trash it in the name of fun
I am really happy with the decision I made

could be because cobra sell jet kits as well.

i´ve found with all the cobra systems i´ve mounted, the most the bike has needed was a touch on the p.m.s.
