Choke not increasing idle 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I am new to the forum and have just purchased an 05 road star silverado 1700 with aftermarket pipes (straight pipe no baffle) and aftermarket intake (Maxflo). I believe the carb has been rejetted. The bike runs beautifully but when I start it with the choke out it does not increase the idle speed much and smells of gasoline. Is there a way to check for choke function or is this normal?

Thank for any input.

If your bike is jetted properly then you should not be able to start the bike when it's cold without touching the throttle. When set up, the bike will start with the choke pulled out without having to touch the throttle.

Your choke may not be functional.

Take the carb apart and clean out the choke plunger area.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE PILOT JET. i used a DYNO JET JET KIT and noticed when i replaced the pilot jet the replacment looked like an ordinary jet while the original one i tok out had a long tail on it with a series of small holes. anyone else have an answer or solution? are the pilot jets supposed to look alike? i will try to post a picture of the stock pilot jet

I tried the no throttle start with the choke out and the bike started right up. I've always given a little "goose" on the throttle when starting maybe from my dirt bike days. I adjusted my normal idle speed after she warmed up and it appears to be working OK.

Thanks for the help.
