New Cams 7 Years, 5 Months ago
With winter upon us, it is time to look at upgrades for the scoot. I need to know if a ported manifold, new cams and 42mm carb will be worth the extra power. I have an '04 with the BAK, Yamaha long drags, speedstar ignition, ais removed.

I am looking at the yamaha parts, but am open to suggestions. I don't really want to go to hc pistons or a big bore kit (yet). I am alos thinking of changing the front pulley to a 31 tooth.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, throw them out here.

"Worth the extra power" That's a value question.

With what you've added to the '04, the "ported manifold, new cams and 42mm carb" will give you a 'seat of the pants' improvement but the the 31 tooth may give you the same feeling at a cheaper price.

David:

I've made some modifications to my 01 Silverado and by far the best upgrade was the ported intake manifold. I'm not saying the power was increased substantially but the 'rideability' of the bike was very much improved - mainly smoother throttle response at low rpm and reduced 'sneezing'.

For the biggest bang for the buck with your current set-up add the ported intake manifold (Baron's or Speedstar) and the 31 tooth pulley with 128 tooth drive belt. The stock carb is excellent when jetted correctly for each exhaust/air filter/intake maniflod set-up.

When you get into high compression pistons, big bore kits, cams etc. the dollars really start adding up with less power returns for dollars spent.

BUT...it is fun to add performance parts and chrome to improve both performance and appearance for personal reasons and taste.

Good luck and ride safe
