Breaking in Engine 5 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
Looking for some input regarding break in of my 06 roadstar. I Currently have 10K on the bike and now installing h/c stock bore pistons, cam kit, 42mm carb, barnet clutch, the works. Is there a break in period or do I drive it like I stole it?
Thanks

Ohhhhh! Should be interesting to see what people think.
Here's a site that you may find interesting ....
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
There are also opinions that the rider should take is easy for the first few miles.

Seems like you would break the new stuff in the same way you broke in the old stuff. Did you drive that like you stole it? I'd ride at all different speeds and RPMs without staying at any one place for too long. I wouldn't wind it out to the max until after about 600 or more miles. Supposed to be easier on the valve train that way.
Looking for more go fast I see. Be careful.

I was going to put up the same link that Doc did because I wish I would have done it. But since you already have that method I'll give you an answer from the other camp that someone got on the RSR site.
....man you will get all kinds of opinions on that question. in my own opinion based on my experiences that i have had as a mechanic and having owned probably forty bikes in my years, not to mention a few race cars, is to ride the bike varying the speed on the freeway so as to get a good ring seating. stay out of the throttle heavy until you get the manufacturers milage factor under your belt. not only are you trying to seat the rings correctly , you are also trying to get a good cam lobe to lifter interface. you can do this by bringing the revs up to about two thousand and hold it there for ten minutes or so on the sidestand or just ride the bike on the freeway for a while and not blasting the throttle. the breakin on cam lobes is critical , so if you dont want to wipe one take it easy. also the trans is wanting to wear itself in so dont be power shifting without the clutch. the 1700's have a sweet trans....at least mine does. well that is my two cents

I've always been told to break it in like you're always gonna run it. The final decision is yours.
