My bike has never done it before, but it has started to vibrate on decel. What nut do you tighten? Is it the big chrome nut that stares you right in the face when you're on your bike (just below the riser)? Are there more than one nut I need to tighten. I checked the wheel while on a jack and it didn't exaclty "slam" to one side or the other, but it was indeed pretty loose. If I wanted to repack or replace my bearings, how would I go about that? Thanks in advance.

The "big chrome nut that stares you right in the face" only holds the top tree down .... it has no function with respect to the 'tightening' down the front end. You need to remove the tree too see the nuts which affect the bearings.

Tightening it down will probably solve it, unless you have a flat spotted bearing. My dealer tightened mine down for 45 bucks. Was worth it for me. I ended up have new bearings and races put in because of a flat spot that I guess it got hitting a pot hole. They tell me its not a big job once you have done it.

I just went thru the service manual, it looks pretty strait-forward. Only, you have to have a special tool (I'm sure yamaha would be glad to sell me one) to tighten the nuts. And I need a torque wrench (been meaning to get one of those anyways).
I would love to do it this tuesday/wednesday (off days), but I'm leaving for a 5 hr road-trip down to the beach on Saturday. Don't wanna have it taken apart w/ no time to put it all back together.
The problem is mainly in the grey matter between my ears(as of now) with the vibes, so I think I'll tackle this when I come home.
Man, between that service manual and you guys, a fella feels like he could build a bike from the ground up!
Thanks!!!

I think I paid $37 US for the tool. You don't really need it and most of the time I use a pipe wrench.

Tighten is hard to take the slack out of the bearings, back off and tighten lightly.
