New overheating problem 3 Months, 1 Week ago
My wife's '04 RS with approx. 18K miles on it started running hot while we were out last weekend on an 700+ miles trip. Checked the oil level & it's ok. Looked thru the service manual but it lists about everything on the bike as being a probable cause. I'll pull the plugs and check the air cleaner, but has anyone got any other ideas? Thanks. The bike has been running fine all along and starts fine. No other symptoms other than the noticeably higher temps.

What made ya think it was running hotter? More heat coming off of it? Did it start running bad?

Could be a lot of reasons other than in the manual. Mean air temp, altitude, type of oil (synth vs dino), running hot-rated plugs, lugging the engine (bikes are designed to go balls out), riders sensitivity to heat , etc. I'm shootin' in the dark here . Maybe someone else'll think of something. Sorry if I couldn't be of any help.

Thats the same thing that happened to me!!

RandeeReid , your going to get a ribbing on that one, I don't think a Road Star ever made has over heated yet unless you run them out of oil. They will get hot and the carb will start acting funny, if its an older one, but I highly doubt you over heated it.

    What was it doing?

Hello RandeeReid. Welcome to the group. Glad you could join us. You haven't changed out the muffler recently have you? I have noticed that mine runs a little hotter since I put quiet baffles in my V&H Longshots. That is the only thing I can think of that would make it run a little hotter other than what has been suggested.

    Ride Safe...
