Bad Fuel Pump? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
After riding for 10-20 min bike cuts out like its running out of fuel. First time it did it I was able to keep it running by feathering the throttle, then it seemed to clear up. Second time it stalled and took 1-2 min to restart. The third time, longer to restart and it wouldn't run for more than 1st and 2nd gear on acceleration then it would die againand restart hard. I replaced the fuel filter, vented the cap and removed the roll over valve, still does it(fuel pump?)its a 04 1700 with 5000 miles it sat on the showroom floor till I bought it in feb. Jus lookin for some input. HELP!!

You could get a piece of gas line and run it straight from the petcock to the carb (by pass the pump) and see if it still does it or not. You probably won't be able to really get on it but it should run good enough to see how things are.

Took the bike into the dealer cause it was covered under my warrenty. Come to find out the problem is stcky valves. 5000mi sticky valves should not be a problem. If I wanted a bike with bullshit problems I would have bought a harley!

Re:Bad Fuel Pump? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
my stealership is going to fix the bike under the warrenty(its an 04 but was purchased in april of 06). He said they had run into this a few times before. Yamahas fix is to remove the heads and ream the valve guides for clearance. I guess we'll see when I get the bike back. Cause the cold weather in OHIO dont stop me from riding, just the rain and snow. I still plan on puttin some miles on this winter. I "should" have the bike back in around a week(we'll see about that).

Re:Bad Fuel Pump? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
My understanding is they are supposed to put on stronger"speedstar" springs as well.I am no expert on the subject .There are a couple of things there is rumor that will help you avoid it as well .....that is burn regular gas and make sure your oil level is not over filled ie I and others put 4 quarts in instead of the called for 4.3 as long as its in the operating zone on the stick.I think the problem is the amount of oil you run in the engine as there seems to be alot of difference in the way folks check and change their oil. Also lugging the engine is rumored to cause it and there too I think lugging lets the extra oil sit, bake, cake, and stick.I also think some check their oil by screwing the stick back down when they read the stick instead of just settling the stick down onto the oil check opening for lack of better words .....Good luck Hellbent hope i didnt bore ya ....... I also had a round with the sticky valves not too long ago. MMO got me going but when I went to ask the dealer about it, he told me that there was no such thing, that the stories are an internet hoax...so now my bike is afflicted by an internet hoax/virus eh?
