I Just got my bike out of the shop for sticky valves. A complete top end rebuild with speedstar springs, new valves ,reamed guides the whole works is what the yamaha tech did. One more thing lean as u can get the bike to run is better.

Did Yamaha take any blame and accept responsibility or was the bill on you? It seems to me that this isn't normal as far as most everyday engines go and that Yamamama should be well on the way to issuing a recall or something.

Here's the way it seems to work. Some dealers will say they never heard of sticky valves. If you call Yamaha they won't be much help. If you find a dealer that wants to help you they will let you know if you do actually have sticky valves. If you do they will call Yami and Yami will tell the dealer to fix it. No charge to you.

About the Seafoam. If you running good now you should use the seafoam as a preventitive. A capfull in every tank for starters (Not the whole can). I'm assuming you did a shock treatment with the MMO and you put some in your oil. So you need to change your oil as soon as possible. My 2 cents anywho.

Re:Sticky valves...try this 1st. 2 Years, 1 Month ago
I've found that Amsoil is great for keeping things free, clean and running smooth. My local Yamaha dealer has it. Would suggest you try running it & a little MMO for at least 1500 miles before spending a pile of $$$ for engine work. You can become a dealer for about $20. Plus your can go 2X as long between oil changes. They have a tech line, those guys are great. Check out their web site. If you want more info let me know.

You need to change your oil after running a bottle of seafoam thru the tank cuz then you will have a lot of impurities and carbon deposits from the seafoam breaking it all up. Just remember, only 4 quarts of oil.

Wrench, over on RSR, had said that the 06 Road* had new, stepped valves, according to his research on the subject. After double-checking the part number, he admitted that the valves didn't change after all.

Over on the RSR forum, there are stories of folks who have resolved the "sticky valves" issue without having to take drastic measures. If you do a search on "sticky valves" you'll find them.

Thanks.

It didn't change as far as "stepped" but it did change. And it appears that the new valve will be what you get for some older models at least.

Just one more little bit of information I grabbed today. I stopped at my dealer and asked them to lok up exhaust valves for my 04. Guess what nember they came up with? You guessed it I'll bet, the 5UY number. It supercedes the 4WM number. Yea, big surprise huh? I'm going to call to see if they have gone all the way back to 99 with the substitued number.

And the main difference seems to be the grind / seat:

I just got back form looking at one of the new 5YU valves. I was disappointed that the parts guy could not describe it to me properly. He said it was stepped. Well is is I suppose but not like he described. The stem just widens a bit at the start of the tulip. There are some differences though.

The face has 5YU on it and the old valves have 4WM.

The seat face appears to be noticably wider and cut at less of an angle, closer to 45. The extra sdeat face width gives the illusion that the valve is bigger but it isn't, the angle of the grind gives this illusion. The old valves look a little thin on the seat face and the angle is steeper. The old valves looked like mine, they look like they sit IN the seat with little outside margin. The new valves appear as though they will sit ON the seat with plenty of margin on both side. This appears to be a conservative approach to valve facing, no steep angles, no thin areas, just good old fashioned meat on the face. This should promote better cooling and sealing. The old valves I compared the new ones to came right out of an 05 with 8000 miles on it they were working on while I was there. The other thing that sticks out is the finish on the stems. These new valve stems don't look like your run of the mill hard chrome plated valve stem. They have some sort of plating or coating that looks alomst like color case hardening without the colors. They are dull, almost army drab green but very slick feeling. My observations are that the valve is different.

I was pretty let down when I saw no real step on the stems but my overall observations are that the valve is different in some key areas, seat face width, grind angle and stem finish. There's of course no way to tell if they valve is made from a different alloy but the noticable differences are there for anyone to see.

Or at least this is waht I think the final verdict is.

OK I have a question about the SVS (STICKY VALVE SYNDROME) Sunday i went to go on the toys for tots run started the bike let it run for about 30 seconds and pulled away. After a couple minutes pushed the choke in a bit then a bit more got about a mile or 2 away from the house and at about 1/4 throttle she started to miss and choke, was hard to pull away from stop lights and just cruise. So i turned around and took her home. is that the symptoms of SVS or sound like something else? it was about 10 degrees above zero

If you put your hand or a piece of paper over your back pipe does it suck in?
This might help:
