Fuel gauge 6 Years, 5 Months ago
Has anyone had problems with the fuel gauges on stars, I have a 2000 and this year I noticed that when I fuel up the gauge goes to full the back to e and light comes on. After a while it seems to straighten its self out. I do thinks it is getting worse, any feed back would be helpful.

Thanks

I think they all take a while to read full after filling up. There is a delay or dampener to keep the needle from bouncing all over. what you have could be a bad connection somewhere or maybe the sending unit is going bad.

Dollarman--

When I first got my '04 Roadie, I had all kinds of weird problems with the fuel gauge reading incorrectly. If you disconnect the battery for a few hours (preferably overnight), then hook it back up, the needle gauge should settle in the proper place. Sort of a reboot of the computerthats needed every once in a while. Who woulda thought a part of our beloved bikes was made by Microsoft?

Hope that helps and welcome to the forum!

My 04 R* fuel guage occasionaly did some unexplained things like wrong reading and of course the slow swing to full after a fillup, but at 7k miles it has gotten much better. Disconnecting the battery is something I should have thought of a I have used the diconnect and touch togeather method on cars to eliminate a check engine light from errant sensor signals. Got that one from the Car Talk guys.

It is typical for the guage to move slowwwwwwwww after a fill up, takes quite a few minutes to register properly. Not sure about the going back to E and warning light thing.

My 04' does the same thing. I ride for a short period of time and it bounces back. Will try the battery thing, curous to see what it does.

I am guessing that since it is an electronic guage, that it takes several readings every so often and averages them out to give a tank level and that is why the swing is so wide after a fill up .It takes a short period to catch up.Like Musky said it keeps your level from floating all over the place.......Coug

Just to clarify .....

Disconnecting the battery is used to reset the 'computer' when having problems with the guages, such as the speedo not reading correctly.

It will not cure the slow response of the fuel guage after filling up. As others have commented, the fuel guage is slow to respond to fuel level changes and it takes some time for the guage to register full after filling up the tank.

My 2007 R* is sloooowww to show a full tank after fill-up. Judging from the other posts, this seems to be another quirky characteristic of the R*, along with the 'knocking' noise from the engine under certain conditions.
