Opinions will vary........but it's safe to say you can switch to a full synthetic oil at 600 miles. I did. All of the "breaking in" process is well along by then. BB

Yeah, I'm going to try to stop worrying about it. Once I'm out on the open road and groovin' I don't really think about it. It's when I'm pulling up a slight grade in my little town in 2nd or 3rd and I can hear the damn knock bouncing off the buildings I get a little self conscious about it.

It's sorta bumming me out, but there are certainly enough positives about the R* to out weigh this item.....for now.

My hope is that something can be done about it, though. I'm going to try the Lucas Oil Stabilizer on the next oil change.

I was wondering if anyone who has HC pistons could comment: does the bike still knock? Louder? Quieter?

2005 with 15000 miles. Don't have a knock or maybe I should say that I can hear. I have HK 3" pipes. I do notice a lite tick at Idle. Maybe adjustable push rods would help this. But just reading the post a wonder if maybe some are getting the issue of Knock confused. Pinging, Rod Knock and lifter or valve ticks sounds very different from each other and it sounds like we are rolling them all in to 1 issue. Just my interpretation though.

Well, mine is knocking up a storm, specifically under light loads in third and fourth gear, and it's driving me out of my MIND!

I took the bike on an 800 mile round trip to Boston and enjoyed the hell out of it. With 1000 miles on the odo, I started riding it hard, and it seems to like this! Really nice cruise character at 80-85. Bitchen! I'm into it!

Then, I pull off and cruise up some blvd for some gas and the thing sounds like a bucket of bolts. Really $hi%%y.

I'm officially bummed, because I just don't enjoy listening to this crap. It sounds like crap. Absolute crap.

Did I metion it sounds like crap?

I'm running Amsoil 20w50....yada yada.

I've got some Lucas I haven't put in it yet.

But really, in 39 years on bikes I've NEVER heard a change in oil cure noises like this thing makes. I'm afraid I'm stuck with it.

Of course, I bought my leftover out of state, so I'm sure my local dealer is going to jump all over the chance to help me.

I'm either going to figure this out or I fear a serious financial bath is coming. I can't imaging someone buying this bike from me after riding it and hearing the ungodly racket it makes when your just puttering along (not lugging, mind you....this clacking/knocking/ticking happens anywhere from 35-50 in 3rd, 40-45 to 55 in fourth.) If I really get on it, it sounds fine, but sometimes I just want to cruise, and when I do this thing really bums me out.

If you run the lucas 20/50 synthetic vtwin oil, pay close attention to your clutch, It may start slipping, a couple other guys on here other than me noticed it but they havnt got back to me if changeing the oil helped. I changed my oil back to the yami oil and it helped but I ran it to long and my clutch is GONE.

Thanks Bill.

It's the Lucas Oil Stabilizer someone suggested. Supposed to be OK for the clutch. We'll see if it does anything. I might try it out before the next change to see if it helps (just replace some of the oil.)
