swapping front disc 1 Month, 4 Weeks ago
Hello

I have a 2001 Road Star and I am thinking about going with polished disc. My bike has those chrome pie pans and one of them has a doughnut weight inside of it. I do not like the look of the pie pan. I looked at the parts catalog and the 2004 does not have the pie pan cover but the disc is a different part number than my 2001. Will a 2004-2008 disc fit my 2001? What is the purpose of the doughnut weight? What would happen if I just did not use the pie pans and had my current disc polished?

Thanks,
Greg

You can toss the pie pan.

The weight inside the cover is a harmonic dampener, without it you may hear a 'humming' noise.

The rotors from any year are interchangeable and you can also put some of the R1/R6 rotors on.

Since the 2004-2008 do not have the harmonic dampener due they hum?

I took my front rotors by a chrome shop today. They are normally closed on Sunday but they have a couple of big job to get out so they had a couple of workers in. I asked about polishing them. The guy I spoke with looked at the rotors and told me they looked like steel rotors not stainless steel. He stuck a magnet to them and it stuck and took a good pull to get it to release from the rotor. He said magnets did not stick like that to stainless steel. He told me that because they were steel not stainless steel I would need to chrome them other wise they would start getting the rust spots on them again. Since he was not the owner of the business I decided it would be best to get comments from here about if they were steel or stainless steel and chrome vs polishing, before I did anything.

Yeah, you can ditch the pie plates...
I like the nipples *(spoke nipples) showing!

There are various grades of SS. The rotors are SS but not pure SS, that's why a magnet will stick to them.

The polish up great and don't rust. Don't chrome them.

I guess I did just the opposite, I bought some used pie plates off of e-bay to add to my 06 mags. My pie plates come off a 02 Roady so yes they will work on any year and spoke or mags........Another idea would be to upgrade to the newer floating rotors, but I bet they are a bit pricy.

I have the PM brake set-up on my Roadie...because of the springer front end...it was only $4 bills for the front set up for a single disc with all of the attaching hardware. They are WAY smaller than stock.
