Cobra Speedsters installation 6 Years, 5 Months ago
Just wondered if there's any little quirks that I should be aware of when installing my new Cobra Speedster pipes? Also got my jet kit today. Still looking for an air breather kit. I'll probably get the Twin Velocity soon.

Just his 600 mi. mark. That didn't take long!

Thanks!

Pretty straight forward, I put Cobra Speedster Slash Downs on a couple of months go. First quirk is get new exhaust gaskets. I tried reusing and had leaks that made for very impressive backfiring. Second quirk, check the flange on the pipes as mine had a weld that needed to be ground flat to make a good seal.

Follow directions and order of tightening carefully, make sure you tighten the flanges before tightening the clamps that holds the mufflers to the head pipes. If you reverse it can make getting a good seal difficult.

While many say no need to jet when you put the pipes on, I did have to open the PMS up to about 2.5 turns (stock was 1.75 turns out). The scooter ran great, but hot so I went for the air kit right away. Set up is 06 R*, Sea Level, Main Jet 170, Needle fourth groove, PMS 2.75 turns out. Get the Barons PMS Adjusting Screw, makes it easy to tweak.

I put the BAK on and love it. The Twin Velocity is good, but it sticks out further and my leg hit against it. I tired it on a friend 04 R*. The BAK mounts in nice and tight and gives you back the room your stock unit was using up. Both are quality units and will improve the performance.

Good luck.

Have fun taking the stock pipes off! Yamaha uses Crazy Glue instead of Lok-Tite

On the stock exhaust mount,,,,,the rear brake line is routed through a circular guide. Best to cut it and bend it open,,,,,rather than remove line from caliper,,,,,then reattach and bleed. Cobra's come with their own rear mount.

The stock pipes have nicely machined smooth mating surface for the head pipes as well as the Yamaha Megacone Speedstar. However My Cobra pipes had a nasty weld seam that is a potential for leaks The stock gaskets are smooth and more rigid and can be used again if in good shape however the cheap crush gaskets may not be used again and but may even provide a better seal if the mating surface of your head pipes are made with a visible weld line..and you cant get them ground or machined flat. PS bought crush gaskets from cruiser customizing and they were skinny and some what of a joke the OEM are far better... thicker and wider

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/12/11 22:54

It wouldn't hurt to pick up a pencil torch or some such thing. It makes it a lot easier to get some bolts loose if you heat up the bolt heads to loosen up the industrial strenth loctite Yami uses.

i´ve said it before here (and the guys will think i´m getting senile), but if you are under 6ft tall, you´ll find the twin velocity intrusive and uncomfortable. it works well though, and is easier to dial in than the hypercharger.

the bak is a good option, and comes with a needle and jet kit specific to your set-up, as opposed to the kuryakyn or dynojet jet kits which are `one size fits all´.

having said that, i have had some good results with both kuryakyn and dynojet jet kits.

dammit! i´m rambling again!

erizo,
I've heard allot of folks say that about the twin-V... I am 6'3", have a Twin-V and have not really noticed it at all. I'm real pleased with the set-up. It works great! Anxious to see how it works with some V&H Longshots this spring (unless those "Dooleys" that thebru is getting convince me otherwise)

oops.. forgot to mention. My little brother rides an 03' R* (a black one!), and is under 6 foot. He has rode my bike, likes the Twin-V and has one on his list to Santa (the little copy-cat).
