Air cleaner/intake perfomance 3 Years, 7 Months ago
I know this will garner a lot of personal opinion, but I'm getting ready to install a set of "Bub Stubbies" on my '05 RS and am trying to determine what air cleaner/intake will yield the best power gains. I'm thinking about either the K&N for the stock airbox, the complete K&N, the ForceWinder or the Hypercharger. One of the guys at the local Yammy shop recommended the Hypercharger. Anybody have any hard numbers regarding this mod? I sure do appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

Tom

Humbucker,

If you search on "BAK" or "Hypercharger," you'll probably find a hundred threads to weed through. Another popular one is the "MaxAir Maxflo." I think the hot one at the moment, though, is Mr C's do-it-yourself intake that bmatpt mentioned.

I'm still running stock except for replacing the OEM filter cartridge with a K&N. No real power gain, but the filter doesn't fall apart, so it's about economics.

IMO as long as you have a free breathing filter the rest is about the look you want..I had a HC on mine, I didn't like the way it stuck out..I now have Mr. C's .....

Personally I like the Barons BAK and jet kit. The Hypercharger and Barons both flow about the same and there is probably no measurable difference in performance between the 2. The Hypercharger is fussier to get dialed in, at least that is what I have seen on several postings. Whatever you do when you change out the intake jetting is key. I have no experience with the other air kits so will read and learn as this string progresses.

I looked at Mr. C's. It looks quite good, actually. I lik e the low profile.......and the price sure is right! Thanks, Tom.

If my bike had not already had the "102 c.i." billet cover when I got it I would have gone with Mr C's round or the same one in oblong shape. But instead I did a modified Poorman's BAK. I added the K&N element and used my Dremel to cut off all of the lower half of the stock airbox back except for the lower mounting tab. Of course I don't have any figures but I figure it flows as much air as the bike will ever need.
If you can find the thread, I posted pics when I did it.
