#130177 drsierra (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 2 BACKFIRE 3 Years, 7 Months ago   My 2004 VStar 1100 has 5,000 miles on it. All of a sudden it has developed backfiring, during acceleration, running, and deceleration. It also idles rough. I dumped the gas and replaced with new, but no change. It starts OK, but runs rough. Check all bolts to make sure they are tight. Also, make sure all your vacuum lines are tight. I am not sure about the way its set up on a Vstar since it has 2 carbs, but on the Roadstar, there is a vacuum line leading from the carb to the airbox ... check to make sure that hasn't shaken loose first.   Logged     The administrator has disabled public write access. #130187 MS1700 (User) Platinum Boarder Posts: 2585 Re:BACKFIRE 3 Years, 7 Months ago   Yep intake air leak, I been wrestling with that for 12K miles, they finally fixed it Friday with some fabric washers around the bolt holes and it's back to old habits Monday, I got 800 miles of a RS running right and that's it. It acts like it's bad gas or choking because with the intake leaking, it's not drawing in the gas it needs, You can make it run better with Jetting and other ways but the root problem is an air leak IMHO. That's what mine is all about and I can't wait to get it sealed. If you have a leak the fluid will be sucked in and the idle will change! If you do it with things cold and nothing happens, ride it enough to get it up to normal operating temperature and try again. Expansion when things heat up may make a difference between operation when cold or hot. If you don't find anything when checking the intake then try the exhaust. Check the pipe attachments to the cylinders, check the clamps at joints in the pipes, check for CRACKS in the pipes. Moderator Posts: 12504 Re:BACKFIRE 3 Years, 7 Months ago   Like was said the VStar 1100 has two carbs and it sounds to me they are out of sync which will cause it to run and idle rough. It isn't like the R* that has one carb for both cylinders. I ride with a couple of guys who have the 1100's.
