Drilling stock exhausts per FatBike 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago

I am about to start on the project of drilling out my stock pipes per the FatBike article. Looking down the pipe with a flashlight, it appears that the plate to be drilled is down there a ways and I will need a long drill bit. Is that correct? There was no mention of a long drill bit needed for the "Stage 1" drilling of the plate. Or is a closer plate offset inside and I just can't see it by looking down the pipe? I don't want to screw up a set of stock pipes so am being careful here.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Doug

I had same ? at one point. I latter read someone used an 18 Inch drill bit to hit the second plate. It's just about that deep I guess. So yes, longer bit or bit extension. Although I have not went stage 2. MC

Experience is a tough way to learn ... because, you get the test first and the lesson afterwards.

For stage one you only need a normal everyday run of thr mill drill bit as the first baffle is only about 3" in from the end. If your careful in removing the cone, and you only do stage one, you may be able to put the cone back in and be pretty much stock again. Lots of people like the sound of stage three but there will be no turning back. If you do only stage one it is suggested that you drill eight half inch holes. I first tried just four hole but there was a noticeable "fluffing" sound on decel until I added another four holes per muffler.

Regular bit will do it for stage two. I didn't take mine off the bike either. Laid one of my trusty pieces of garage carpet on the floor behind the bike for a nice soft spot and both pipes were just about the right height to lay on my side and drill. I ground the cone out with a dremel but a die grinder is more appropriate for the job (melted the plastic end of my Dremel), when the cone comes out the first plate is just about where the base of the cone was. I drilled eight 1/4" pilot holes in each plate then opened them up with a 1/2" bit. The entire process took about a half hour - 45 minutes including spraying a little flat black inside the opening and cleaning up. It was a very easy mod and made a huge difference in the sound quality!

As per several posters here on the forum, I drilled mine out a few weeks ago. Eight 1/2" holes per pipe. I drilled right through the cone. I started with a spring loaded center punch, drilled small pilot holes as square to the cone's surface as I could get- tilting the bit to straight in after going through- and through the next plate, and finished with a half inch bit. I kept the engine running to blow the shavings out and revved between holes. Easy as pie... did it right on the bike... but you have to wear safety glasses- you get hit with lots of shavings. Sounds great and I like the look of the eight holes around the center hole.
