Have question about drilling the stock exhaust- 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
In cutting the weld to remove the cone, you cut through
the chrome portion of the cone. Do you also cut through the underlying pipe or is the chrome part of the cone supposed to be removed by itself? Have never done anything like this before so needless to say I am proceeding very carefully here.

Thanks for your help,
Doug

If the pipe you're talking about is the same one in the center that is removed in the stage 3 mod then it won't hurt. The pipe in the center of the cone is completely removed in stage 3. I hope this answers your question. BTW that cone is a bear to get out. Just be patient.good luck, Nick

Doug this is what the cone looks like once its removed. There is no chrome to grind!

If you use a Dremel its going to get pretty hot. I nearly ruined mine the weld is pretty hard. If I had a 1/4" burr without running across town to get one I would have used my die grinder its a heavier tool and would have made the job much faster.

Here you can see the screw I put into the cone before I started grinding. Once the cone was loose it was easy to grab the screw with a pair of pliers and remove the cone. Grinding the weld with a less than optimal tool was the toughest part of the job. Once the weld was mostly ground through I gave it a tap with a hammer and old screwdriver I keep for just such a job. If you do this like I did with the pipes on the bike don't pound on it grind it till you think its through and tap it to loosen it the rest of the way
Total time of completion for me was about 45 minutes start to finish.

Tim

Yeah, I like that idea. Since I put the Cobras on my bike I've studied the factory pipes a bit. If you have a long drill bit I think you can go right up the center and drill from both ends of the pipe. Since the wife complains so much about the noise from the Cobras I've considered doing it. All I have to do is find that drill bit in my tool room . . .

And you are doing this on a roadstar right? What year model....this mod works great for 07 and below and I think a few with 08's are doing it but I can verify 07. Hopefully you're not doing this mod to a diff bike with these plans lol. Let us know whats up.

I did the stage 1 then went on to stage 3 but after further contemplation I decided to go all the way and gut the stock pipes. Took a bit of work and several hours but you gotta love the sound!! Will get some pics and a sound byte ASAP.
