Gas Mileage Again 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi.
I bought a 03 Roadstar from a dealer 2 months ago. They added pipes and a hypercharger to it. So far the best mileage I have gotten is 30. I contacted the dealer, but he said to pump up the tires to 41 psi. I did that and now get 28 mpg. I am really not familiar with this bike since I am switching from a crotch rocket.
Is this a jetting problem I am looking at?
Thanks in advance. Terribly new to all of this, but really enjoy the bike.

"Your mileage may vary"....remember those words my friend because they're gonna haunt you. I've heard mid 20's from some to over 50 MPG from others. I know making sure the enricher (or as some call it the choke) being fully seated after warm up will help kick the mileage up as will not being on the throttle rev'ing up the bike all the time. Keep the jack-rabbit starts to a minimum and just ride reasonably and you'll probably squeeze a few more miles out of it.

Tweaking the carb settings might also work, but the Carb Gods will need to advise you on that.

Re:Gas Mileage Again 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
new plugs . . . clean air filter . . . proper tire inflation . . . correct idle and decel adjustments . . . yeah, the list goes on and on. I can tell you that I've run from fill up to fill up with mileage varying from about 30 up to 50 or so. In fact, I had back to back tanks like that awhile back. Averages out to 40. Hmmm. When I was bucking a 40 - 50 mph headwind in West Texas (heading to Colorado) I had a couple of tanks that got just 18 miles a gallon. With no changes to the bike I topped over 50 plus mpg on the same trip running downhill from Colorado with a tail wind and an 18 wheeler busting bugs for me. When I averaged it all out over about 2K miles I was running very near 40 mpg average again. Considering that I ride the roadie pretty hard - I can live with that.

I would suggest reading all you can in the tech articles section to begin with.
But I would also say that it probably does need jetting changes even if they were changed when the pipes and airbox were changed. It seems that most will just use whatever the jet kit recommends and from what I read here and my own experience thats never right.
If you're up to it, get your carb apart and find out what jet sizes are in it, if the float level is correct, where the clip is on the needle and how many turns on the PMS. Again, the tech articles give you all the info you need to do this. With that info we can be of more help.

30 mpg is a bit low, but be aware that how you ride will have a tremendous affect on the mpg..your coming off a sport bike, so your probably a bit aggressive with light to light riding....

Re:Gas Mileage Again 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
dealers generally jet rich, and the hypercharger likes the extra fuel, find out what they put in
Main
Pilot
# turns out PMS

03 would be a 1600, and I think most are using a 165 mik main, stock pilot and with the hypercharger
you could start around 2 3/4 turns out and adjust from there to fine tune..

my brothers bike has longshots and the hypercharger has very light decel pop like a race car going into a turn he gets 48mpg cruising 2 up my 06 I get the same 1 up, but avg 44mpg mostly fast highway 80ish..

the pilot will suck up lots of fuel, so knowing whats in your carb will be a big help,

So many things will affect your mileage.
• Light to light speed,
• Jack rabbit starts and stops
• Wind and Weather/temps
• Road conditions
• Your total overall weight (do you have a rider?)
• Driving habits, slow --> fast

I have and use a throttle friction set (cruise control) & that’s helped me maintain even speeds on the road, also gives the right hand a much needed rest from time to time.

When I'm on longer trips, I typically have the old ball and chain on the back, and her weight plus mine added to the weight of the bike your talking about just over 1 ton (no need to ask who adds the most to that) and that can really reduce the mileage. Also, check your Odometer and make sure it's accurate -- see GPS vs Speedo thread.

Well lets see a ton is 2,000 lbs? The bike weight is 722 dry so about 750 full, I weigh in the neighborhood of 230# and she is about 190# (on a good day)

750 + 230 + 190 = 1170 Yep, you saved my life! Just over 1/2 a ton. It's still a lot of weight, even for 1650cc's to push into the wind and up hills.

Jetting the bike rich in combination with your hypercharger will create power, but it will certainly cost you MPG's. There have been alot of good suggestions here. I would pay close attention to what jetting the dealer put in when you had the charger put on. You may be able to lean the bike out some and restore some of the mileage without killing your power. that would also help help off any problems with carbon build up on the exhaust valves.
