The FatBike article says to "cut the weld that holds the tailpipe cone to the exhaust pipe". Does that mean that you have to cut out the bead of weld completely or can you cut just inside the weld to separate the cone from the weld?

Nick asked what year my bike was implying that this method is not applicable to all V Stars. Mine is a 2001 1100. Is that a problem?

One of the guys at work has a 2007 1300. His pipes look the same as mine. Like I said in your other thread I ground the weld out then tapped it the rest of the way with an old screw driver I use for such abuse and a hammer.... It would be more difficult to cut around it IMO...

If you have use of a dremel tool with a cutting wheel it will cut the welds and then just cut the cone into pie shapes. It will come out easier.

I learned the hard way. I ground and ground on the weld on the first pipe. This was working but very slowly for me. Again everyone's results will vary depending on tools. I went to Home Depot and bought dremel cut off wheels. Problem solved. Get a cutting wheel that fits inside the exhaust pipe and cut about a 1/4" inch behind the weld around the whole pipe. I used about three of the wheels per pipe. They come in 20 or 25 packs. Once you have cut the entire pipe in a cirle, cone will almost fall out. Plus it leaves the existing pipe with a nice clean cut. Drill away spray with flat black BBQ paint and you're ready to go. Hope this helps.

P.S. Don't forget to tape your chrome!!
