Need words of wisdom - exhaust noise 3 Years, 7 Months ago
My newly purchased 2001 V Star 1100 has BUB Big Willys and has been rejetted. I like the performance but not the noise. My options are to get 1 & 1/2 inch baffles from BUB (Yes they are available) or swap out for some stock exhausts and then drill them out per the FatBike article. Either way I may have to rejet but that is not certain.

Admittedly I want it both ways; performance and reasonably quiet. Any words of wisdom you can give me on this dilemma would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

How about a nice set of ear plugs?

You'll have to see if you add baffles if you need to tweak the carb. Shouldn't be a big deal. I hate the stock exhaust, too dang bulky and too hot. Are you running baffles now?

It's really hard for us here to say as this is a Roadstar forum. There is a V-star forum and those guys might serve you better for an answer. First off let me say that normally just adding pipes does not require rejet. Second if you dislike the sound I would go with the baffles. You can never tell what's going to happen when you put baffles in until you do it and then ride the bike. You can then check your plugs are riding the bike and see how your jetted as to how the plugs read. I hope this helps you.

THe pipes have the "stock" baffles that the Big Willys came with. I have been told that going to 1 & 1/2 inch baffles will drop the noise level about 4 to 6 decibles.

Yes I am running baffles. THe folks at BUB told me that there is a 1 &1/2 inch baffle available that will decrease the noise level 4 to 6 decibles.

Here is a link
http://www.vstar1100.com/

Again I think I would go with the baffles that are recommended by BUB. While you have the baffles out you could wrap extra exhaust wrap around them before installing and that will help quiet them down.
