How to dis-assemble head lamps and replace H3 bulb 3 Years, 7 Months ago
I recently picked up a mint 2001 RS that is the apple of my eye.

I am doing some basic maintenance and cannot figure out how to take apart the assembly for the starboard light. Pics of the lights are here -light

I believe that these are Yam factory H3 lights.

Any help guys?

Dave.

Try looking here: Paul
Or look in the Tech Articles section on the site here under "electrical". BTW :welcome:

Just unscrew the nut and bolt on the bottom of the locking ring and pull out the light assy. There is a small little screw holding the bulb into place along with the ground wire attached.Unscrew it and walla there you have it. Other wire is a quick disconnect.

I upgraded mine from the 35wt to the 55wt sylvania at k-mart $2.99 each.

Shoot all this information is for a 2006, do not know if it is the same for older models.

P.S. Make sure that when you put it back together that you line up the rubber ring an get lip in hole or you will be blessed with the spinning runing light syndrom

By the way

Thanks man. That was the next thing to try but I did not think it would require that simply to get at the bulb. I appreciate it!

You may want to rethink going to 55 watt bulbs, the early Road Stars had an anemic charging system and you may not be able to handle the extra load.

Edit to add: Welcome to the Clinic, forgot my manners there for a second.

A dab of silicone on the gasket before re-assembly WITH the gasket properly installed (Index tab in right slot) will assure the it don't spin. I use a dab at 10, 2, and 6 O'clock. MC

As I understand it there are at least 2 different kinds of light housings. The sealed beam type has a lock ring with a nut and bolt at the bottom, and the halogen bulb H3 version has a small sheet metal screw at the bottom of the housing to hold the retaining ring in place. I have the later version and H3 bulbs. I replaced the bulbs with the Sylvania Silverstar bulbs and have been very pleased with the improved lighting.
