Problems when changing oil to a 2000 Road Star. 2 Months, 1 Week ago
My 1st oil change.

I just changed the oil on my 2000 Road Star 1600. I was wondering if I really have to add the oil to the crankcase directly? I only added it to the dipstick tube and it took almost 4 qts. before spilling out. According to the Clymer Maintenance Manual, I need 5 qts of oil when performing an oil/filter change in the bike. Is that the amount of oil required for both the dipstick tube and the crankcase together? How do I know when the crankcase is full? and what type of funnel do I need when filling the crankcase since the space is so small that a regular funnel can't fit in?
Please help!!!
Thanks!
Albert

Do it through the dipstick tube. Put in 2 qts. Screw the dipstick back in. Start it up and rev it a couple times. Take the stick back out and add the other 2 qts. 4 qts total. No more.

Just what Musky said make sure you drained it from both spots and 4 QTS only with the filter

The deal about putting oil directly into the crankcase is only for an overhaul; nothing to do with a normal oil change.

Ditto.

Also, when the suggestion to "rev it a couple times" appears, it means you really got to rev it. I had the spillover experience the first time.

Many Happy Miles. Yupper only 4Qts or you could end up with the SVS. Also make sure your bike has had the tranny recall work done if you just recently bought it. Just go to local Yami dealer (stealer) and give them the VIN # and they can run a check for ya. Ride Safe, OSO

Must be serious about that revving it a bunch for the next two qts. First time I tried to change via the recommended method here, I still overflowed while putting those last 2 in. Gotta rev it more than I did with those first two qts., I guess!

Ex-ACTLY what happened to me, too, as I noted in my previous post. I was too gentle and had to do some wiping.

Uh yeah and before "reving" don't forget to screw the dipstick on too...
