Oil Change 6 Years, 5 Months ago
I'm changing my oil.

All is well until putting oil back in the bike.

It takes forever to get the oil to go down the filler tube.

Am I missing something or is this just a tedious process?

Put in 2 qts. SCREW THE CAP BACK ON. Start it and let it run for about 15 seconds. Shut it down and put the rest in.

I assume that you are using a funnel. Try lifting the funnel a bit off the inlet as sometimes you can get a good seal between the funnel and the inlet. Then if you fill the funnel up with oil the air has no way to escape.

Yo, DocShadow,

managed the funnel as advised, but the oil just fills up in the dip stick tube and sits for a painfully long time before settling down in the engine.

I got to the point where I would put in just enough to fill the tube and leave room for the amount of oil the dip stick would displace w/o overflow and start the engine. I probably did that 15-20 times.

Using castrol 10w-30, nothing really heavy.

Does your oil go right on into the engine w/o sitting in the tube?

Danke.

Bridge... this may be a stupid question, but you did drain the oil from the crankcase AND oil tank (two separate drain plugs)? Was just wondering if you were adding back more oil then drained. Would not be the first to do it.

B'Dawg,

Ya got me! The manual doesn't specify removing the rear drain plug as part of the oil change op. And I caught some instructions from this forum that specified the rear drain.

I did drain some of it after putting in ~ 1 Qt.
It looked pretty funky and I put the plug back in as it started to clear up.

But still, I don't think that accounted for the oil's reluctance to go in.
I was able to put about 2 Qts. in after removing less than a Qt. from the rear drain.

I wonder if I opened the transfer oil filler cap to allow the engine to "breathe"?

Yo!

On the initial drain you should have had around 4 qts of drained oil. Did you? You have to drain it out of both spots.

There are two drain plugs.

1. On the left side (head faces left) under the footpeg. You'll need a thin wrench to get at it as it's in an awkward location.

2. Underneath the bike, back of the right side of the engin (head faces down) and in line just forward of the large transmission.

Both drains must be used or you will not remove all of the oil from the bike and so you won't be able to put 4 qt back in.

Bridgesm--

I read your post and just have to ask to possibly save you some headache in the future...you said you added 10w30. You're not using stright automotive oil, are you? Gotta watch for the oil with the friction modifiers. With the wet clutch on the R*, you might very well be slipping out of gear a lot and damaging internal compnents to boot if you are using the auto oil.

Just something to check or to potentially save a fellow Roadieholic a future headache.
