Engine tuning 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Hi,
Great site, been scanning alot of messages and learning all I can about the R*. Not having another bike to comapare with, I thought I would check in with a couple questions. Tried to give as much background on the bike.

I have the following on a like new '03, only 1,000miles on it:

BAK
Jet kit 167.5 / PMS 2.5 / 4th clip
Self-Port manifold
AIS gone
Accel screw all the way in w/nut on back
Cobra Speedster Longs
Dyna 34a and 5000rpm
Also have a medium sz windshield on at the time, so I am hearing more of the engine, that must be the problem

good stuff: The bike has good performance on the open road with throttle up. It is a little sluggish on the low end in stop and go, especially when cold. Have to ease it out a bit in first with the clutch. Took it on a 100mile mountain run, after, pulled the plugs and they were light tan, seems to be burning good.

question I: After installing the Dyna, the engine sounded a little ruff, maybe a tad bit jerky idle with some extra noise. Even the pipes sounded a bit louder. Anyone else have experience with the Dyna setup? I can try a 32A or 36A setting or I can put the stock ignition back in and see if it sounds the same.

question II : Even before the Dyna, the engine is making some loud ticking, I think it could be that the valves are out of sync. Sounded OK after the 600mile tune-up, lately after running for about300 miles, the valve ticking noise is getting really anoying. Is most noticeable when cruising 30MPH around town. What would you suggest, should I bring it to a good yami dealer for a listen to the valve ticking, and if needed would a sync job be covered under warranty?

What I plan to do is get into the carb this weekend and try to do some fine tuning, maybe dial in the PMS and play around with the accel screw (opening and closing both to find the sweet spot)

It may be that the bike is running good, maybe I need to switch oil I think the last dealer service they put some house 10W/40, not knowing, this is my first cruiser. I Just want to get the bike dialed in so I can enjoy, worry free, for a long time.

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice to help.
Have a great weekend,
Mike

The Dyna setting closest to stock is 32A. Guys run the 34 and 36 A without problems. The noise you hear may not be related to the Dyna so I'd change it out with the stock to check.

Don't forget it's going to run a little 'noisier' when it's cold outside.

The ticking is probably the valves. They either may not have been adjusted properly or have loosened up (that's why they check them at 600 m). I'd have them checked out just in case. I remember letting one go on a previous bike and it got be stranded in the middle of the prairies.

Remember that as it gets colder the carb runs leaner so you should turn the PMS out a bit, especially if you are running perfect or lean at hot temps.

Doc,

I made the changes to the Dyna to 32A, opened up the PMS to 3 turns, and did 1-turn out on the accel screw. Fired it up and it seemed to idle ALOT better. Couldn't rev it up too much as it is almost midnight here. I will take it out for a spin tomorrow to check it more. Next week I'm going to get my ticking valves checked out by a Yami tech, maybe just a sync job. I am real happy with the mods I made to the bike now and can't wait to get back out on the road.

I appreciate your advice.

Mike
