Fuel mileage-During Break-IN 5 Years, 4 Months ago  
What kind of fuel mileage is normal during the first 600 miles. I'm currently at 300+ miles and on my 4th tank of gas. I called my dealer and asked if i could bring it in for them to check it out under warranty they told me to wait for the first service and they will check it out then. I told them I wouldn't be bringing it to them for the service id be doing it my self and they said that it wouldn't be covered under warranty if i did it my self. Sounds pretty lame to me. My brother doesn't remember getting such poor mileage when his was new. Let me know what you all think. thanks in advance

You will initially get poorer gas mileage during breakin.

Fill the tank up, reset the trip odo to zero, go for a long ride, fill it back up and note the mileage.

What do you get?

I am pretty sure that (If I remember correctly) that my '05 would go about 200+ miles before hitting reserve when it was new. Of course I was going easy on the throttle on acceleration, and never drove at sustained speeds past 1/3 open throttle for the first 1,000 miles. Basically I gently worked the motor all through the gears and different RPMs under slight load. Avoiding any thing that would excessively heat-up the engine. Choke used no more than absolutely necessary to avoid washing down the cyl walls of oil. But engine ALWAYS allowed to warm-up to toasty temp before take-off. After 2,000 miles the mileage really increased gradually as engine began to "loosen-up." ...More power too.
The other thing I noticed is that I got way better mileage when I went on trips to SE Alberta where altitude got lower and air denser. Around home here we are over 4,000ft above sealevel, air is thinner and bike ran little richer.
Did stage 3 on stock exhaust without touching carb at all and bike gets really good mileage now, doesn't smoke black at anytime. This made it breathe better resulting in much leaner mixtures at my higher altitudes.
Make sure you talk to someone like Doc Shadow on recommendations before you do anything to you exhaust though! There's no going back once mods are made!
(Your bike should not smoke black when idling with choke off, or when riding. And your oil shouldn't get real black or get raw gas in oil etc.)
I would not worry about fuel economy being real good until 2,000 miles or more.

I just got around to posting this discussion so i don't remember how many miles exactly i was getting but it was around 120 miles and i would be completely out of fuel. The ground is frozen right now so I'm not riding. Just wanted to see if this is normal or not. Sounds like i just need to finish breaking it in this spring and then see what happens.

Only 120 miles on a fill up? Boy, that engine must be tight yet!
Well, I guess a guy should wait and see what happens after a few hundred miles are on her. Waiting till spring could be a while though?
Winter sucks, Don't it? It's at least a couple more months till I can get out for a ride in decent weather.
We usually plan a road trip in late April heare in Alberta. Hope we don't get a big spring snowstorm this year.

I remember when I first bought my bike in 02....no mods at all, and I was getting 48mpg. I definately was not complaining. Then the following summer, I installed the Barons Big Air Kit, rejetted, and at that time I installed the Barons Nasty Habits exhaust....I actually gained 3mpg. So on a real good day of riding and not riding like I frickin stole the bike, I got 51mpg. So basically these bikes right out of the box aren't going to get real good gas mileage in most cases.....I think my bike was a fluke, in a good way though. I would suggest that after you finish breaking in your bike this spring, getting yourself an after market air kit, rejetting it and aftermarket pipes. Oh also, get rid of your AIS (air induction system) that will one of the first things to do. One more thing....I know I keep rambling....but most of the time when you get an aftermarket exhaust, you will have to remove your AIS, otherwise the exhaust wont fit. HOpe this helps you out and gives you a better idea as to what to expect.

I don't understand what you mean.

I don't know why/how the AIS would cause fitment issues with aftermarket pipes.

Besides the obvious cosmetic appeal of removing the AIS, it 's best to remove the AIS as you will most likely experience more 'popping' due to the unbaffled nature of most aftermarket pipes.

I have an 06 Silverado, and I have about 5,500 mile on it since purchase in May. As it is still pretty fresh in my mind I can comment. I got around 38 miles per gallon during break in and after about 2,000 miles I was getting 39. This is mostly city riding a lot of stop and go. The first longer road trip was on moslty secondary highways at about 60-65 mph. and I was getting nearly 46 mpg.

Since adding the Cobra Speedsters Slashdowns, BAK jetting, and AIS removal my scooter is maintaining similar mileage. I ride to work nearly every day and take short trips on weekends with some highway miles. If we use automotive jargon combined highway/city mileage is around 39-40 and sustained highway is around 45. Of course since I put the pipes and air kit on I tend to be a little more heavy handed with the throttle so any mileage gains have been sucked up by speed!!!

I should also add I am at sea level.

Doc, I know that when I installed my Nasty Habits exhaust that the AIS was in the way of the front pipe for a proper fit. I also have a buddy and his brother both ran into the same problem when they installed aftermarket pipes. But you are right on the popping subject though. I just wanted to say that I have ran into that problem with the AIS and installation of pipes.

That's interesting!

I had my AIS off long before I put on pipes. I have the Baron's pipes so sometime when I take the cover off my bike I need to take a look at this.
