You got some good advice M7, don't bother unplugging the dash..the wires are long enough to set it on top of the headlight...... Stick to the jetting that is most often used and you will be in good shape......
I think I will be heading that way on WED..I'll give ya a hollar and see how your doing..............

I'm going to re-jet the carb for the K&N open intake I bought off a guy from the RSR forum. I've been putting it off for a couple of weeks and finally decided to do it. Started following the directions on pulling the carb and noticed that the tank really gets in the way, but the steps didn't include getting the tank off. Hence this post.

But now I know.

You getting nervous yet??? I think I'll be joining you in the next few months!

I'm getting ready to do the same next week, I'm nervous about changing the needle, and pilot jet; removing the tank has no worries just like you said though pita. I'd do it right now but x-mas and friggin' shopping are in the way.

OK, before I do a royal f-up, IS there a way to disconnect the wire from the TPS? Or do I just need to try and work on the carb as it hangs on the side of the bike?

I was hoping to be able to actually get it off the bike and on my kitchen table to do this, but I don't see a connector for the TPS wire.

Anyone?

There is a connector. Follow the TPS wire back, it is near the backbone of the frame. Once the carb is removed, the TPS wire stays attached to it.

First, thanks to all the patient folks who are real motorcycle mechanics for their guidance and advice. I'd have put this back together by now without you.

That said, since I am getting no real joy out of messing around in my carb, I'd like to make the right selection of main jet before I button this whole thing up.

The instructions that came with the jet kit from Baron indicates that a bike with baffles in the pipes should use a main jet of 172.5.

Does that sound right?

I would not consider myself to be a carb expert by any stretch of the imagination. I have learned this from the clinic: jetting sometimes (read usually) is trial and error.

FWIW -- I am running a 170 jet, with aftermarket pipes (with baffles) and BAK.

Good Luck Mark!!

170 is a good starting point.....some are leaner (lower #). None of the kits come with the right main , I bought a Mikuni 170 at my local dealer. BB
