screeching noise 3 Years, 5 Months ago
Looking for some help here. My 2001 roadie makes this awful high-pitched scraing/screehing noise at a variety of times. Happens when I hit a bump (sometimes), happens when I shift (sometimes). Even happens sitting still-sometimes. Thought it was a loose whatever, wbut can't find anything loose. Sounds like its coming from front of engine, or fork. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

well if when you're stopping then its likely your front brakes. some noise is normal but a screaming cat is not. if you're downshifting then its likely a loose belt. if its when you're sitting still then you mibgt want to see if you have any oil in your engine!

It could be your fuel tank. When I hit big hiway joints, my tank bumps. The rubber may need to be lubed. Pull your tank off and rub some ivory soap or carnuba wax on the rubber tank mounts. (Unless there's some special rubber lube you can use.)

If it does it when you're setting still it must be something to do with the motor or the AIS. Is the AIS still hooked up? Oil good? Transfer case oil good? Does it shift ok? Clutch feel ok?

OK, You guys have given me some excellent ideas on what to check. The "another chirp"
string sounds like the same problem. So, could be AIS, tank, or headlight housing. can't
be belt--does it when stopped sometimes. And, yeah, I've got oil in the engine!
I'll report back when I find it.
Thx--new to this forum, very helpful.

Found the problem!! It was the gas tank. Apparently one of the rubber grommets tore loose and fell off--it was gone. Caused the noise whenever it vibrated at a certain level.
This is the same problem as was described in the "chirping" thread.
Anyway, thanks to all who offered ideas.

What is the chance of that? That's great.rick wrote:
