The WOT test is to see if your main is good. http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/94/96/

If your float is set too low you will just suck the bowl dry when you get the RPM's up.

If you are not experiencing any issues with yours, leave them as is. When they are out of adjustment they :
1, flood the motor as too much fuel is in the bowl when the floats are set too high( the gas has to go somewhere)
or 2, they get set too low, the bike will run fine until the bowl runs out of fuel and the bike has a starving affect.
The settings you see talked about are what others have recommended as prefered settings (mating surface or just above).
I've had my carb apart on several occassions and have taken care not to move or bump them to a point where they needed readjustment. But years of working on and around holley carbs can make you sick of them quickly.
Did that help?

Re:Adjusting Float Bowl Level 1 Year, 10 Months ago
well first off you CANNOT ADJUST THE FLOAT ON A BENCH!!!! Now i know i dont have as much expirience with this as alot of you, but the carb float bowl mating surface does not sit level while on the bike either front to rear or left to right. So leveling the bowl on the bench then adjusting the float will give you a false adjustment , it must be done on the bike and I have found as relativly easy way to do it.

1 Remove tank
2 disconnect and remove carb
3 temporarily replace tank just slide rear mounting bolt through
4 reattach fuel line to tank
5 slip carb into proper position in manifold
6 slip fuel line on carb
7 turn pet cock on
8 turn ignition on
9 attach tube to float drain
10 measurte float level
11 turn off ignition
12 close pet cock
13 place end of tube on float drain into gas can or emppty bottle to drain bowl
14 remove carb adjust float and go to direction 1

now the measurement is to be taken at the rear left of carb which is hard to gbet to so i would take a measurement at right rear of float bowl first then make adjustments and remeasure from there. If you do do this please take a measurement from right rear of carb and report the results as no one can seem to agree on what or where the levels should be and are taken from

It's not that tough to do. Just jump in and do it. You can set it off the bike. Doc does it that way. You can set it on the bike. Don't over anylize and stress. You can talk to 10 people and get 10 different answers. When I first started working on the Roadie I tried to get carved in stone answers and found out there isn't any. So I picked the middle ground and went for it. I found out pretty fast that all the things I thought were going to be a nightmares were just simple nuts and bolts. Nothing magic. You can do it.

The first step is - If your bike is running good then it doesn't matter if it isn't set the same as what others say it should be.

Musky:

Thanks for the encouragement. You offer good advice.

Actually, in the short time that I've been participating in the RSR Forum and Road Star Clinic, I've come to respect and trust the opinions of several Roadies. You're one of them, Musky.

Thanks, again.

Re:Adjusting Float Bowl Level 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Thank you! That means a lot. I've done wrenching on my bikes as far as maint, add ons, and swapping out parts and I got a lot help from people in the process over the years. The Roadie is the first time I've went inside the carb and I got a lot of help from people here and the RSR site in the process. Besides the fact that it's fun to talk about our bikes and hear about different ideas I really want to try and help people the way I got help. It makes me feel like I earned the help I got. OK, I have to get off the computer here at work now. It's time for the morning break.
