Stainless Steel Cable Lubrication 1 Year, 10 Months ago
|
|
Just got my new Yami SS braided clutch cable today. It says to lube the cable before installation, and lists several specialized Yamaha lubes. In a previous post, I believe Doc & Musky said use 10W40 motor oil or fine machine oil (3-in-1 Oil? ).
Of course, the instruction sheet was incredibly vague...so, I just drip it into one end of the sheath and let it run the length of the cable? And do I do the same for the throttle pull & push cables? I won't do the same for the brake lines...
Thanks!

I have used WD but it isn't that good IMO. Easy way is just go to your dealer and get some cable lube. It's worth it.

RK, I use cable lube, a product that I found forever ago in a bicycle shop, works great, but I'm sure other things do as well.
Here's an old dirtbike trick for the cheap (me) to effectively lube your cables. Take a zip-lock bag, put a small hole in one corner, smaller than your new cables.Force the cable through the hole (kinda like Jim Carrey coming out of the rhinos rearend in Ace ventura 2) until the opening of one end of the cable is inside the ziplock. The bag will seal around the cable and you can fill the corner of the baggy up with your luber until it comes out the other end. Works like a charm. And you keep your hands, and garage floor clean to boot. 2 cents

Thanks guys!
Next to tackle...floorboard extensions! Already held up the Galfer SS braided line, and it's even a couple inches longer than the stock plastic!

I've tried various methods and the BB is cheap and works. Just hand the cable up and leave it overnight or until it drips out the other end.
Bought one of those cable lubricators, the kind that clamps on the end of the cable and you squirt your lubricate into it. Oil all over the place.
Don't use WD - it's not a lubricant.
Try to find some clear lubricant as the color bleeds and you can see under the plastic coating.

I too have one of those clamp on cable lube devices, and found that it worked pretty well with my can of Chain Lube. Of course not many of us have chain lube anymore, but it seemed to work well for lubing up those old cables. The little red tube must be inserted into the opening in the clamp and then with short bursts the lube would go in the cable and soon out the other end. A little lube goes a long way in a cable housing.

I guess I was just overzealous.
