First disconnect the power to the pump, run a gas line from the petcock straight to the carb, and ride for a while. You might not need the new needle. And if you do need to order a needle you'll still be able to ride by just hooking the pump back up.

Some people need to raise the float level some too. And you might have to cut a 1/2 inch or so off the main pick up tube in the tank so you don't have to go to reserve sooner than normal.

I'm a kind of less-is-more guy. I removed the pump, rerouted the line so it is mostly hidden, and went with Mr.C's universal K&N air filter mod... you can see right through between the jugs. I love the open, light sort of look to it.

Hang a formed plate there if you want... and it does look good, but I like a view!

No, removing the pump should have no effect on MPG.

LOL

Makes sense, I thought I caught a comment earlier in this post about more gas being dumped into the carb because of this mod.

Your probably thinking of the post that mentioned that you will need to go on reserve sooner. Its not a case of using more fuel. When the tank gets down low, gravity doesn't feed as much volume in a given amount of time as the fuel pump so you switch to reserve about a half gallon sooner..... I hope that makes sense..

Could have been my comment about venting the cap to allow a faster fuel flow rate. It won't flow any faster than the carb'll drink it, and the carb won't drink any more than you pour down it's throat with the twist of your wrist... Think of it in beer terms--ever "shotgunned" a beer? Venting the tank cap is like when you pop the top--oh, what a difference!
