Clutch bolts 5.8'lbs 7 Years, 2 Months ago

I had a couple of stretched bolts when I replaced my oil gear last year or two. I replaced two of them with machined bolts from the hardware store and I don't think there is a weight difference that would set the clutch off balance (just thinking again).
What would make the bolt stretch?
One was stripped what will it take to keep it in place? red loctite?
teflon tape?
Thinking about changing my clutch spring at the same time. Is it really needed rather than a stock spring? I don't feel its necessary. Comments?
thanks ALL

Hey Draco,
Did you buy hardened bolts? If you didn't, you may be putting too much stress on them. I don't think locktite is going to help on this one, perhaps some will chime in on this and offer some suggestions.
If you like to ride hard, or have done any engine mods, I think the better clutch components are a good idea. Remember the better springs can be tougher to engage (more sqeeze pressure at the lever).

Been there done that. I had 3 bolts stretch then 2 of them snapped in the threads. Had to drill them out then use a screw extractor, easy to do, but not what I planned when replacing the oil driven gear and the clutch. Replace ALL clutch bolts with aftermarket ones. Grade 5 or 8 is more than adequate. Get hex head bolts, not the cap bolts then torque them down GENTLY. Do not even waste your time reusing the OEM bolts.

I only purchased 2 bolts "i think" frickin ol'timers.
I have contacted Dan @ A-1 since I will be purchaseing the barnette clutch kit that he highly recomended not the OEM springs. Since A-1 sells and works on many R* in NE says its quite impossible to stretch those 5.8 ft. lb bolts unless they are overtightened to begin with "the forces transmitted through the clutch in the drive line do not have any effect on those bolts."
I told Dan I'd send him a pic as soon as I found one.

Also told A-1 that just a few others had the same stretched bolts, you too ay. Either the bolts were defective and they came out stretched or the force in the clutch spring or something else stretched them. You put the Barnette kit on? how stiff is the lever?
Thanks for the tips.

Barnett's pressure plate is in, replaced my clutch friction pads as well, but used Yamaha ones cause I heard they are very good (and they are). Lever is stiffer when I switched to SS braided cables, not when I put the clutch in.
