The tube is hard to blow through so the only way to tell if it's not blocked is to free the air going through. I believe it was suggested to try running without the cap. It doesn't matter how you vent the tank. The OEM way is required so that if you take a spill you're not lying in a pool of gas.

So .... if you start a cold bike this problem occurs about 15 min or so later when the bike is warmed up. After it dies can you start it right up or do you have to do something?

It does start right up but not nessisarly right when the bike warms up. Somtimes it runs for longer than that. What steps would have to be taken if it did run with the cap off just fine???

Yes probably electrical ... I doubt that it's related to the fuel system.

Now comes the hard part ... which part

I agree with Road_Hawg that the ignitor could be the problem. It's not unheard of the Dyna going belly up. Your decision now is to throw parts at the bike and hope you're lucky or go at it systematically ... which is going to be a problem. I've seen used 1700 ignitor on e-bay occasionally (not cheap) .... cross your fingers.

You could try prediciting when it's going to fail and try to be 'close to home' when it does, then you can pull out the voltmeter and start testing.

I had an ignitor go bad on a Virago once. There was no way to test it you just had to test the rest of the ignition system and if it checked out it was the ignitor.Fortunately for me my first clue was it went down like it ran out of gas [bogged down like] and I had to sit and let it cool completely and it would start back up and get me back to the house. If I did not let it cool completely it would run till it got to the magic point [heat up]and down she would go,in other words the longer I let her cool the further I could go.I rode the exact same route and the same style of riding to get it to do that.I am not sure if yours will start right back up immediately after the failure but if it will not carry some Ether[starter fluid] with you and eliminate it being a fuel problem or not...Find someone close by and borrow their Iggy would be another way.AS has been suggested I tested every thing as soon as she went down starting with my plugs working backwards because I figured the coils etc would cool slower because of their location good luck with it and you may need to reverse, and start with the coils as electrical components can do some strange things ....Coug

Thanks for looking stinger.

If you do buy a used ignitor, I'd recommend a 1700 one, even if you have a 1600.

Before you bid, ask for the part number off the ignitor ... some folks have been selling 1600 ignitors as 1700 ones.

There are also two diodes to check before committing to the ignitor. Click the link for an ignition system troubleshooting flow chart. The chart is under Chapter 7 "Electrical" / "Ignition System Circuit Diagram" / "Ignition System Troubleshooting". The ignitor is the last thing on the list. You can skip some of the items on the flow chart that you know are good, like the kill switch, kickstand switch, and other components you know are good. If the diodes check good, and all else checks good, you must commit to the ignitor as the culprit. Igntion Troubleshooting Flow Chart. Good luck and let us know when you have found the problem.

Husker, no I dont think it has been taken apart no way to tell really for sure but there was only thirty thousand miles on it when I got her. I found this bike in the garage of a bike dealer getting ready to be fixed up it had been layed on its side with some minor things to replace and a very small of body work to be done. So im really not able to ask the origional owner of it, but judging from some of the stuff that has been done to it this person loved it.

Road, k kewl I will try and get those checked out today and let you know there. thanks

Doc, would you go back to a stock ignitor?? I mean if it were you I was actually thinking of goin to the dyna 3000, if of course I can get the money appropriated. And why would you go with a 1700 ign? The link that was posted was for a 1600 ign.
