Exhaust/master cylinder clearance 3 Years ago
|
|
A few weeks back I threw a question up concerning rear brakes sticking. A quick up date; I have Samson pipes, recently wrapped then in black pipe wrap. My son-law was riding behind me and my brake light would come on. Later my brakes began to drag. To make a long story short, the extra thickness of the wrap on the pipe would expand and ingage the brakes. I had the wrap taken off and the pipes powder-coated. The front pipe being installed (actually no adjustment, they just fit,) they're is very little clearance. As the pipe gets hot and expands, it touches the master cylinder rod. Brake light does not come on, but it does touch. Is this common with aftermarket pipes, and if so, is there a rememdy other than relocating the master cylinder or just knocking a dent in the pipe for the extra clearance? Thanks in advance. MM

You could try installing floorboard extensions. It will move things forward, unless you do the full tilt. Then the master cylinder reservoir raises closer to the pipe, but not the linkage.

May be the Samson pipes, My Bub's have plenty of clearance, You can get the floorboard extension brackets and that will also move your mastercylinder forward....

If you get the kit to move the floorboards forward, does it also have hardware to move the mastercylinder forward?

As you can see by the sigpic, I've got Samson's too & I've never had the problem you're talking about. I moved the floorboards forward, cut off the M/C reservoir bracket & relocated the reservoir to the frame downtube. This was only done, however, for extra legroom not a brake problem. Don't understand why your M/C is so close to the pipe. Btw, you don't need to spend money for a kit to move the boards. I used some 1 1/2 flat bar & drilled my own. When you move the boards forward, the M/C goes with it. It's all on the same bracket. If you click on the link under my sigpic, you can see some pics of what I did with mine.
