Bogging down - no power 3 Years ago
Sorry I'm new / don't get on the forum much, but I am having an issue with my RS I was hoping I could get some advice on. I read some of the articles on "puking" and it might be related, but maybe not. The other night I went for a short 5 minute right...the bike ran fine. The next morning I went to ride it to work and I pulled the choke out, started it up, let it warm up for 5-10 minutes and when I went to take off the bike have hardly any power. It was very bogged down and it was a struggle to hit 35 mph. The local dealer said there was a bulletin that Yamaha put out that sounds similar to my problem.

So far I have checked my air filter..good, checked to make sure I didn't overfill the oil...good, put 1 oz of ring free in my gas tank and tried messing with the F/A screw...still no luck.

Anyone heard of this or know what I can try next, I was thinking of pulling the plugs tomorrow to look at them??

If you regularly let it sit and idle for 5 to 10 minutes (especially with the choke on) you are getting carbon build up on the plugs and in the motor. Pour an entire bottle of Ringfree or Seafoam in a full tank and ride the snot out of the bike through the tank. Wind it out in each gear and hit the limiter a bunch of times. Then put in new plugs and see if it's better. You will also need to change the oil as soon as you burn through the tank of gas.

If you left the choke on full for five to ten minutes you might have fouled the plugs. When I start mine pull choke out all the way ,when it starts I push it half in and ride on. Just a thought.

Definitely pull the plugs. Also, you may not want to let your scoot idle so long with the choke. First ride of the day, I pull the choke (sorry, ENRICHER) out all the way, start the bike, wait a half minute or so until the motor begins to "stumble" a little, push the choke (sorry, ENRICHER) in half-way, and take off. Idling for so long could very well foul the plugs, may cause some valve problems, etc., if you do it too much. After about a mile or so I push the knob in all the way and throttle up a little more. Ride a couple of miles or so to let the motor warm up a little. Then you should be good to go.

Thanks for the quick response guys...so should I put new plugs in before I try an entire bottle of ring free, ride it hard, then change the plugs and oil again...OR...leave these plugs in, entire bottle of ring free, then change plugs and oil.

Also, what is the ideal setting for the A/F screw?

Put new plugs in after. So you have had you carb off? Did you do any jetting? Pipes? Airkit?

Shortly after I bought the bike I put cobra exhaust on and jetted it myself. It ran alright for awhile, but after awhile not so well. I took it to my local dealer and they said I didn't need to jet it and so they took it back to stock and made some adjustments to get it running good.

Stock air kit

I'd try the plugs first, sounds like they're fouled to me. Plugs are cheap and easy to change, so if you do have to run a cleaner and then change them again you'll only be out a few dollars and a few minutes of your time.

They are right about not needing to jet. But if they went back to stock there isn't much "adjustmets" to make. By AF I'm guessing you mean the PMS? Click on the Tech Articles tab at the top of the page and scroll to the carb section. There's some good write ups in there about the different circuits in the carb and how the carb works.
