Changing Handlebars 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I am rebuilding an 05 Roadstar Midnight and was wondering how tall I could go with handlebars before I need to start changing or extending cables and control wires? Any Ideas?

I just added 2" pullbacks. All the lines have plenty of slack still except the front brake line. I rerouted it but it's still pretty taut.

I just took delivery of my 12" apehangers for my '05 Midnight a few days ago. I'm waiting for the cables & brake line to be delivered now. I can tell you this though, I could probably keep the stock throttle cables if I wanted as they are still long enough. The rest of the cables & wiring will need to be lengthened 3-4". My bars are 12" rise, 8" pullback and 34" wide. Stockers are about 7" rise, 11" pullback and 32" wide. As you can see I'm going quite a bit taller but also lots less pullback (my arms are way long !).

You could go wider if you go shorter, etc. One thing I did on another bike project was to remove the handle bars and bolt the grips & levers (with all the cables, hoses, etc attached) to a couple short pcs of 1" dowel. Then I sat on my bike and tested how high/low/wide the cables & stuff would allow me to hold the grips. I had a buddy take some measurements while I held the grips in place and we ordered the nearest sized bars to those measurements.

Sometimes you can "tweak" the cable & wire routing to gain an inch or two, but do it wisely.

the bars in my sig are about 12" high on standard cables. did have to route them behind the yokes though instead of in front. all the wires were no problem. i did change the brake line from the master cylinder `cos it was too tight for my liking, but it was a good excuse to change to s/s lines (ran 3 lines. one from the master as it´s tidyer, and 2 from the original splitter)

s/s lines are a highly reccommended mod
