Did I glaze my front brake pads? 5 Years, 2 Months ago
Went on about a 75 mile ride today, lots of it stop and go. When I started out all was cool, now when I hit the front brakes they made a loud whooshing noise, almost a pulsating type noise. In other words they whoosh whoosh whoosh, not constantly. (Whoosh isn't really a good description of the noise but its the best I can think of, its not a squeal.) It's so loud I know the other cars can hear it. Did I somehow glaze over the pads with the stop and go driving?

If it is stopping normal, probably not. If you're in doubt, pull the pads, hit them with some sandpaper, rough em up , stick them back in and ride. My Honda shadow sabre made a very "noticable" brake noise , esp. with new (thick) pads from the slight "touching" of the pads to the rotors.

It's not stopping completely normal, it kinda grabs....lets go....grabs...lets go. Of course this is happening real fast then slows down as the bike does. It's not like a warped disc either, I've felt that before and there's no front end wobble. The noise is LOUD, not your normal brake pad sound and not a squeal or metal on metal. It's a real deep low frequency noise, wish I could describe it better.

C'mon, I couldn't have stumped you guys. If this were a carb setting (or oil question) you'd be all over it. Help a brutha out!

Take the brake off and see if something came loose or something got stuck in there.

Get the front end off the ground and spin the tire if it roles then hesitstes then rolls you have a warped rotor / or maybe just misalignment of the caliper . one of your sliders might be stuck and not letting the caliper ride square .

I jacked her up and unscientifically checked for a warped rotor, all looks fine.

I don't know if this matters but on the highways going 55+ mph's I could hit the break and it wouldn't make the noise, it only makes it when I'm stopping for a stop light. Maybe 35 and less.

Edit: I only have 900 miles on the bike.

Edit #2: Doing a Google search I found a good description of the noise, it a low groaning noise. But loud.

Try pulling on the brake lever and watch the caliper to see if it moving straight and releasing completely when you let off . almost sounds like you got dirt or something caught in the brakes , caliper or the rotor . What kinda roads were you on ? could have picked up almost anything .

Just normal highways and roads, no salt on the streets around here. I was in an area where it was kinda sandy and blowing. Maybe I'll pull em off and clean em out.

Yeah might just have crud on the pads , only takes a minute to pull and check . If you have a can of break-Kleen spray the pads and let it evaporate , wipe the rotor down too . See what happens . a little spec of dirt can make a hell of a racket on a spinning surface. The noise is probably there at high speed , you just don't hear it cause of wind , pipes etc.
