Hard start after long ride. 3 Years ago
|
|
My 04' Roadstar currently has about 5k miles on it (2k from me) and I have had a weird issue only a couple times since I bought it. It happened both times after about a 45 minute ride in 70-80 degree weather. After I shut the bike down and go to start it again within about ten minutes, it takes about 10 seconds before it will start. I also notice that a small amount of gas comes from around the air cleaner only during these hard to start times. Is this normal for roadstars with a carb? I have read a few things on here about carb "puking" but nothing about it being hard to start.

Hard starting was one of the symptoms when mine would puke. Mine only did it a couple of times after a long hot ride and I tried to start it back up fairly soon after shutting it down. Others will chime in I am sure, but that was one of the issue I had with the carb puking.

I had the same thing on my 05... I suspect your float is sticking... I now use seafoam with every other tank full of gas and the problem has yet to re-occur... My bike will only do this now when the engine overheats in stop and go traffic, but i think that has more to do with the way the fuel lines are run on our bikes...

My 07 R* has also had this same problem. What I've been doing is shutting of the fuel about 1/4 mile before I stop. It helps burn some of the fuel in the carb and seems to help with the puking problem. At least it seems to work for me.

Yep after a puke it floods and will require a lot of cranking to start. Have yet to find a cure.

I might give that a shot. I have already been doing that to a degree because I shut the gas off first and let the bike idle for about 10 seconds before I turn it off.

MS1700. I thought you kind of had it under some control with the insulation you did?

The next time you shut your bike down and it's a little hot. Take your key and remove the gas cap after it sits there for a couple of minutes. Let me know if you hear a whoosh sound. Your venting on the tank may not be working properly. This was a problem on some of the early models like mine which is a 2000. Mine was so bad that not only would it puke like your describing and would be hard to start but one day it was so bad I could not get the gas cap off. When I did force it off I heard a major thunk sound and low and behold I had a dent in the top of my tank right under the dash on the left side. The dealer replaced my tank and also replaced a valve that vents the tank. This was 9 years ago so I don't recall the exact name of the valve. I was doing what others here were doing I was turning off the petcock and running it to try and use up some of the fuel. Once my tank was venting properly never had a problem since.

rollover valve
For the life of me I don't see how that would relate to 'puking'.
What you describe is a vacuum in the tank (that's why they implode). In that case the direction of flow would be the gas getting sucked out of the carb into the tank not forced out of the carb.

Hey hardone2 get. My '01 had the same problem. When I checked out the vent pipe going into the tank...there wasn't a hole! My parts guy at my dealership told me about this site and the "vent your gas cap" thread. Vented the cap...0 problems since.
