Remember were are talkin metric fasteners here and sae grade 8 and sae grade 5 are imperial designations for fastener strength
iso metric grade 8.8 which is a number stamped on top of a metric fastener is equivalent in strength to an sae grade 5

iso metric grade 10.9 is equivalent to sae grade 8

you will see 9.8 and 12.9 as well

You a right in that probably chrome fasteners arent not any higher than 8.8

And keep in mind SS is at best equivalent to grade 5 sae

It is not advisable to use lower strength fasteners where a higher strength
one is required

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2007/03/12 18:55

Musky, Pop speaks in "proper Mechanical English", most of us speak in "slang" mechanical english, You just need a more up-to-date interpretors translation.

Ace hardware (at least in this area) has a great selection of CHROME bolts , I've put many of bolt from them on my scoots. Just make sure that the brake hardware doesn't require grade 8 (I'm not sure) and then use chrome ,as I don't think chrome comes any higher than grade 5.

First stop I made was Ace, they do have a nice selection of chrome bolts, unfortunately the didn't have the one I needed. The brake caliper bolts are 10-1.25, whatever those numbers mean. Why can't the rest of the world adapt to our measurement system?

I'm gonna replace it with an OEM bolt next time I get by the stealer, both local one's are about 20-25 miles away. One's close to work, I'll swing by there on my lunch hour tomorrow. Of course the same bolt that was $1.15 at Ace will be $6.25 at the stealer.

I recommend you guys keep an eye on those bolts, once I broke the tension with a wrench I could easily unscrew it by hand. It's no wonder it vibrated out. Must be some of the only bolts Yamamama didn't loctite real good.

10-1.25 means it's hard to find.

Yamaha uses the 1.25 thread pitch everywhere on the bike. Local fastener store will order them for me but they're something like $3-5 a bolt depending on the size.

Yup, when I told the fella at Ace the size the first thing he said was "I was afraid you were gonna say that". The selection is much smaller in that size for some reason.

Hopefully I don't have to replace bolts too often. I thought I got over dropping parts on the highway after I sold my Low Rider.

RFF, you never "get over" dropping parts. And usually, the guy behind you isn't a big fan either.
